As far as I remember NO, I am into building a stand-alone PC for certain heavy sampler-use, one at a time,.

So I ws considering this new G3258 Hasswell-based, unlocked, blasting fast, and dirt cheap dual-core as a basis, on a cheap H81 board

If you have enough cpu power with however many core the cpu has, then it would work I guess. I mean a lot of stuff couldn't run well on a single core.

If the question is basically do you need a ridiculous amount of power, uh I guess not.

Yes - Diva and several other u-he instruments seem to do this best.

There's a bunch of instruments that can process different parts on different cores. Classically all samplers that do disc streaming are multithreaded - one thread would pre-load sample data while another would play it back. Lately also a few synths process voices in different threads, which then may get executed on different cores.

As multicore has been the mantra of progress for a few years, I'd favour number of cores over speed of single core for audio.

Thanks a lot for all the helpfull reply's ,... seems I've been living in ancient times ,... a little to long :-)

I better drop that G3258 system then, and try to find some cheap quad-core solution insteadt, seccond-hand 3770K perhaps

I see now that even the Emulator X3 from back 2008 got support for both multi-processor and multi-threading

Sometimes it also seems to depend on what your DAW does. I remember combinations of DAW and synth where setting both to multi-core support resulted in worse performance than when one of the two was set to single-core.

You can get a desktop quad core new for $200 and laptops for $300, even a less powerful computer isn't much cheaper.
