I have a 4 year old 13" MacBook Pro and I'd like to upgrade to something new to get more storage (my 320 Gb drive is almost full) and more performance (more VST's!), but the new Retina MBP's aren't very affordable, especially if one ups the drive storage to a reasonable amount.

How are Mac Mini's as budget production-only computers? I'm looking at the mid-range $600-ish model and am wondering how it performs versus what I currently have. Are there any performance indexes out there comparing new versus old Macs?

This would be the Mac Mini you are considering to buy:

-Mac mini (Late 2014)
Intel Core i5-4278U 2600 MHz (2 cores)
Benchmark 64-Bit Multicore: 6590

Umm. Partly related.. There's interesting numbers over at the Geekbench database.

-Mac Pro (Late 2013)
Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 @ 3.05 GHz
1 processor, 12 cores, 24 threads
Benchmark 64-Bit Multicore: 37041

-Dell Inc. PowerEdge R920
Intel Xeon E7-4880 v2 @ 3.10 GHz
4 processors, 60 cores, 120 threads
Benchmark 64-Bit Multicore: 143028

How's this one look:

I doubt this lasts long, but I just found this listed on Craigslist. 64 bit multi core performance looks impressive compared to newer machines. Is that relevant to audio performance?

Yes, it's the main thing if you want to run more plugins inside a daw, more tracks, etc.
