Hi.

I know the easiest way would be to buy a (powered) usb hub with on/off switches, but those are not sold in my country for some reason (well I saw one but it cost 179e). Saw a lot of them in China but it'd take ages to come here and I'm not 100% sure about the quality. Just read a story of someone who burned his house with some china electrics.

So. I hate to mess under my table every time I want to hook stuff to my usb ports, so I thought that does anyone know any software, that could turn selected usb ports on/off with single click or similar EASY way?

Thanks.

I haven't done this but have definitely used device manager to turn stuff on/off. One thing though, if I remember right, disabling a usb port doesn't necessarily turn it's power pin off (if that's what you want to do). Anyway, if the thing above works you can just create a couple of icons on your desktop to toggle the setting....

if we are talking windows just use the control panel device manager. Work out which ports are linked to which on board controllers by doing disable/enable experimentation then connect your stuff in groups that you like to switch off from time to time.

There's a freeware called USBdeView (USB Device Viewer) by NirSoft that might be able to do it.
I know it's helpful for solving some USB issues. It's portable freeware.

Other than that, all I can think of is disabling ports in the BIOS during startup.

Do you want to disable them or power them off? You can disable them in either the BIOS or Device Manager. But why? Do you want to prevent a device from interfering with another via the USB bus or something?

I also have disabled USB ports ( and possibly unused root hubs) mainly by device manager. In my case in helped increase USB bandwidth on my audio card and also suspect to help reduce latency. Only other port was for midi keyboard and made sre it was on a separte channel in the device manager ( view by connection ) .

I aso once had a USB hub external that almost killed all the bandwidth on the channel. Not sure if latest USB still has those issues.
