Intel and AMD IPC performance:
By the way, this new CPU was designed by the same guy (Jim Keller) that was the lead designer of AMD K8 microarchitecture launched in 2003-2005 which gives me the hope AMD will do great this time.

yeah, he also left AMD even before the Zen announcement. that doesn't sound encouraging.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

He was hired for that project, he was not a permanent employee. He did not leave because of problems with AMD. He completed the project and got a new project with another company now. And probably he will do another project for AMD in the future.
Nor does AMD depend on him. They got more than enough experts on their own, who can continue to develop the new platform. They just needed a little push in the right direction.

Exactly! He finished his work that's why he left. He designs CPUs, production is in the hand of AMD. That's what he always did, he works on a contract and after finishing the job he seeks other challenges/opportunities. He worked like this even for Apple.

If that diagram is correct...

It seems AMD will be particularly good at SSE instructions, which I take it are rather important for music software (the Legend synth for instance).

It's either incorrect, or inconsequential. Can it really be 8-10 times faster (or, maybe in this case, run certain instructions) than comparable CPUs?fluffy_little_something wrote:If that diagram is correct...

WOOOOTWOOOOOOOT !!!!
If these leaks are true, just how badly has Intel been gouging customers??!?!!?

Interesting that SSE seems to fare so well as I believe AVX is somewhat hobbled in Ryzen compared to Intel's offerings. Some AVX instructions will take 2 cycles to perform rather than Intel's 1. Any developers care to weigh on in the implications there? This stuff is way above my head.Dominus wrote:It's either incorrect, or inconsequential. So I'm looking at these boards:
http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-am4-mothe ... um=related
Some of them have DVI and VGA ports on them.
WTF?
Give me three HDMI ports and call it good.

A comment on the looks alone of those cards, they look so much simpler than what I'm used to, even from the times of building systems with AthlonX2 and Pentium150 and so on. I wonder if much of the chips and stuff is molded into the card...

Not a developer so not someone who gets all that down and dirty with AVX2 but I've been following some comments on this the last few days.cron wrote: Interesting that SSE seems to fare so well as I believe AVX is somewhat hobbled in Ryzen compared to Intel's offerings. Running thread here helped put it into context for me : https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php? ... ost1797770
And I can see where problems might arise. Ultimately I think it's going to come down to how much software is optimized to leverage the AVX2 instruction set, that is the part I'm not sure on. I don't think it's a whole lot on our side of the fence, the impression I get is that it may be more heavily in use with video processing & offline rendering.
+1 on wanting to hear more from coders and developers!

I don't really like the CPU name but that guy must be a total genius. I bet he pretty much names his fee.

AMD Ryzen pricing: $500 for 8-core 1800X CPU, undercutting Intel by $600: https://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2017/ ... zen-price/
AMD said in August last year that it was targeting a 40 percent IPC uplift over Excavator for Ryzen, which would just about place it within the Intel Core ballpark.
At an event in San Francisco last night, AMD CEO Lisa Su said that they actually surpassed their target: Ryzen's IPC is 52 percent above Excavator.
The good news is that Ryzen's launch is Real Soon Now: March 2, to be exact. AMD is presenting Ryzen at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on March 2, and the chips, motherboards, and boutique PCs will go on sale the same day. AMD told us in San Francisco that March 2 is a hard launch: product will be available on that day, at the price points listed.

Given that pricing, I wonder if the FX series will see a clear price drop once the new stuff is launched. The top 8-core models are still about 200 euros, the new silent cooler included.

I think will drop to ~150 euros or so.
Can't say I'm not excited about their new CPU. I really hope to be as we see it in these news. Can't wait for March, 2nd to see what's all about. Intel has been ripping people off for far too long, we need AMD to succeed.
