I'm not sure what they use internally, but I have 2 Glyph drives that have lasted FOREVER.

Wow this is interesting

What I didn't know was that Lacie is actually owned by Seagate and that even though promoted as "Pro" they contain bog standard Seagate drives - no wonder my other failure was with a Lacie drive (that one failed after 3 months).

I use a Toshiba Touro 1TB USB3 drive (works on USB2 ports too) for my mp3 and movie collection, and a 500GB Freecom drive for backups, etc. Both have been totally reliable for several years. The Freecom is around 10 years old, the Touro is 5 years old.

I thought Touro was Hitachi? - they no longer seem to be available (at least not easily) as I think the line is being discontinued. That would have been my first choice given that it contains a Hitachi drive.

Freecom Quattro looks pretty good - thanks

It may well be Hitachi ... I was going from memory. I bought another one for a friend last year. Its nice and quiet too. Didn't know they were discontinued. Amazon are still selling them ... https://www.amazon.co.uk/touro-hard-dri ... rd%20drive

I get the impression they are - certainly the Touro's are getting harder to find eg

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hitachi-Touro- ... B006L0XE7O

(yeah they have 1 or 2 smaller ones still but no larger ones)

but then again they do still advertise them on their own site but I'm thinking they may be planning a new line or something so pulled all the older models from retailers

The Freecom looks much better though anyway

Yeah. The Quattro looks decent. Good connectivity options.

Does anyone have an opinion on using these DAWs that are cloud-based? What do you think that setbacks are for beginners?

Thanks

what is the advantage of an external hd over internal hds in enclosures?

when my wd mybook died...it was hell trying to get my files off it...i had to break it open (i did get the files off eventually, but it took 4 days of coaxing to do it). anyway...i now use internal hds in one of these:

my question about the advantage of an external hd over this is a real one. i kind of made the decision to use internals in an enclosure hastily...so, while im satisfied with my decision so far...im wondering if maybe i missed something.

Apart from some weird Seagate external harddrive, none of my external have ever failed on me. I only use them for backup puproses, and for occasional connecting to my Smart TV though, to watch a film sometimes. I use 2 hard drives for my backup, so to say, a double backup, in case one fails.

Rule #1 make sure it has external power, usb only is something I don't recommend

It's so odd how experiences can differ with different drives. When I saw the title, I was going to recommend Seagate, but obviously you haven't had good luck with them. I have a half dozen internal Seagate drives (only three are in my current system, the others are older and used for spares, but still work great), and 6 different external ones, and the worst that any have had is a single bad sector on one of the oldest ones (and one drive that stopped working when I broke the connector on the casing, though that drive inside seems fine). I've also seen people swear by Lacie.

Have you considered the external SSD route? Samsung makes one now. It won't help that they are more expensive, but Samsung SSDs seem to have a fairly good reputation?

The externals from wd and seagate just use their 'internal' drives in a case anyway, so no difference. I know with the WD desktop mybook series they use the green series drives, which are lower performance but also lower heat (which is important since the wd desktop enclosures are passively cooled).

By using a decent external case with fans (some of the 'hot swap capable' multi-drive bay ones would be ideal) you get active cooling which in turn lets you use better performing drives - also means you can up-spec to drives rated for heavier use (red pro series or higher) which is the other issue with seagate and wd's externals - they're not really rated for continuous use more as backup drives.

Other option is a small NAS (even the cheaper NAS units can saturate a gbe link now, so as fast as a typical usb3 external hdd) and run full blown RAID on them
