Nope. You need to install system on it. Assuming you're on Windows, it will have to create boot partition.
You can still copy other data that's not related to system install.

With the proper software (like for example EaseUS Todo Backup) you can create an image of the old SSD in the new drive, then resize the partition (to take advantage of the extra space you have in the new drive - for this you may need somethig like EaseUS Partition Master) and finally replace the old SSD by the new (bigger) SSD that has the imaged copy.
Apart from some authorizations that would probably need to be verified (or even reauthorized - Windows will probably be one of them) everything else should work. I did this several times with my system.

I downloaded some free software to do that about a week ago to migrate from a 120GB SSD to a 500GB one, copied data and resized the partitions, and Windows refused to boot. Played around with it for a bit, tried an emergency Win 7 boot repair, etc. Nothing.
Then I was able to restore from a full backup (using the built in Windows 7 backup program) I made a few days prior. Booted right up, partition sizes were the same as the 120GB. Computer Management let me extend the Windows 7 partition to grab the other 300+ GB easily. The only thing I lost? The partition copying software that I downloaded. Good riddance.
To do that - Backup your existing drive using the Windows backup software onto your external USB drive. Make a bootable repair CD. Boot from that, then restore from the external onto the new drive. Boot up, go into Computer Management, Disk Management, and then extend the partition out.
(As an added bonus, now you've got a current backup of your boot drive.)

Yes, one has to use the option "Clone Disk" of course, because there is also usually a hidden partition that's needed to boot up.fedexnman wrote:I had a 60gb adata SSD that I upgraded to a Samsung 120gb SSD , I went somewhere online Samsung site and downloaded some Software to clone the drive ... when I take out the old C: and replace with the new G: - will the computer boot automatically to the G: or do I need to re-name it before the swap ?

I use MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition
https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-pa ... nager.html
I clone my C drive to another HDD. It work great.
However they use "copy" to mean clone.
Edit: I made a bootable CD that I boot from to do my back-up.
The bootable CD download is free and easy to make.

Yeah you can and did do it.
If the cloning tool did not expand the partition size, you'll only see 120GB used and have to use Windows Computer Management -> Disk management to expand it to 500GB
