Now that WindowsRT, Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 have been out for a while how is the situation for apps...?

As I understood the biggest reason that windows phone 7 did not have apps was that devs had to use C# for coding which made porting programs from other platforms too expensive. But I suppose that problem is now solved, so how does the platform appear now for audio apps...?

There is definitely a demand for another music platform in addition to Apple and until now Android has failed to deliver in the same way as ipad (mostly because of audio latency and also lag in graphics / touch response). So how does MS platforms appear from programmer perspective..? I remember reading from somewhere that even MS might have latency issues.

Is it easier to port apps from ipad to android or from ipad to windows or equally difficult for both..?

I don't think there are that many audio apps out for Windows Phone or Windows 8 yet. Like you said, one of the issues with Windows Phone 7 is that you can only use c#. There aren't many audio libraries out there for c# that you can just plugin and use, so it requires porting of a lot of code. There are also some drawbacks because it is a managed language and will run a bit slower than c++. This isn't much of a problem on Windows 8 devices which have more processing power, but can be problematic with lower powered mobile phones.

Now with the update to Windows Phone 8 you can use either the XAudio2 or the WASAPI audio apis. From a latency standpoint these are more responsive, with WASAPI being the faster of the two. I have only used XAudio2 so far, but in practice the response time seems good. Still think iOS is a little faster, but much closer now.

As far as porting goes I think a lot of that is dependent on how the app is built. If your code touches a lot of the audio API on the specific platform it will require a lot of work to get it ported from one operating system to another. I'd assume that porting any audio app from one platform to another, even if it is written very generally, is a non-trivial task.

Even though there are still some things that are easier to do on iOS (MIDI), I'm still optimistic that there will be more audio apps. If I had to guess I think you'll see more audio apps added to Windows 8 first, and get more for the phone once it gets a larger user base.

I am also optimistic. Or at least certain that there will be another audio platform in addition to iOS, there are just far too many of Apple avoiders out there (including me) for that not to happen. The big question is just that will the second platform be Android or Windows. Until now Android has failed to deliver a latency and lag free response, even with the newest versions (jelly bean) of the OS, and they have had 5-6 years time to do this. If it is not going to change soon and MS fixes windows8/RT problems in the next version, it is going to be Windows that becomes the second mobile audio platform.

Thanks to referring to my OP. Yes let's not fragment the topic. I agree with you. :)

Though for the sake of clarity my thread refers to any app that works in the Windows 7 and/or 8 touch screen monitor which could include the MS Surface.

For my personal likening I prefer the ability to use a large touch monitor. I am a studio musician and do not require a portable tablet.

I bought a Nokia Lumia 520 Winphone8 device about a week ago. I must say in overall it seems to be much better than Android, although there is a lot of annoyances, bad points and design flaws.

OS stability, efficiency and optimization seems much better and virtually no lag anywhere. It is much more smooth and better experience than my Samsung Galaxy S2 android device, and it cost only 130eur!

I have installed two music apps, Sequencer and Piano. I still don't have much experience from the former, but the Piano seems to have as bad audio latency as Android (100ms or more). So currently no hope of a decent DJ app or virtual instrument.

Is there any hopes of real time audio for Winphone8..?

I read a lot of good things about Windows phones lately. Might have to grab one of those Nokia Lumia 520's one day too. :P Just a little sceptical about the appstore and general app offering in comparison to Android and Google Play. It's really huge.

I'm kind of amazed that the latest Lumia budget models, can host 128GB SD-cards :o
