Can anyone recommend any synth-based (not sample based) apps that have a simple sequencer built in? It doesn't have to be a drum synth - anything will do.

I'll start with Tweaky Beat and MoDrum.

Korg iMS20 and iPolysix are nice.
Also Alchemy mobile is well worth checking out.

Thanks - I've got Alchemy, I can't believe I didn't list that myself :) I'll check out the Korg apps!

2nd recommendation for Korg Apps. Nice built in 4 part sequencing. For some nice sequencing run virtual to any iOS synth, try littlemidi sequencer or StepPolyArp.

Nanostudio for a more traditional studio/daw environment/sequencer.

Edit: Maybe misread your post, anyway all these are synths (and some also do samples) with sequencing capabilities..

Are you saying that these sequencers can actually sequence other ios synth apps? Is that via coremidi or something? I am trying to figure out the whole ios workflow since I am used to the DAW/VST world. I didn't think this was possible.

Nanostudio has a very good synth (Eden) and a superb sequencer: a very good all-in-one solution. Unfortunately, it can't sequence other apps.

Most music apps worth mentioning support virtual midi (in and/or out). So for the most part you can sequence or control other synth apps with different kinds of midi controllers (like Arpeggionome Pro, Soundprism and so on). Usually the name of the opened apps show up in the MIDI settings of whatever app/sequencer/controller u use.

Sunrizer well technically it's got an Arp rather than a sequencer, but it's a VERY complex arpegiatot

Yeah, via CoreMidi. Run synth with background audio and choose the sequencer app for midi in on the synth, then choose the synth as output source on the sequencer app. Dig into the midi options on the synths. Some have better support than others.

Addictive has a pretty sophisticated Arp/32 step sequencer that's pretty cool to play with. Set mode to 'hold' then go back and edit parameters on the control page, XY pads or Filter/Wave spectrums on the fly.
