Suggester

*Note, SessionBand was also listed in a post but I didn't include it in the list as it seems quite different that the rest. It includes audio loops that contain chords and chord progressions while most if not all the apps on the list generate midi chords.

Of the bunch, suggester is my favorite. Big, nicely organized chord library, simple but powerful user interface. I usually use Suggester to rough out progressions, record the midi into my computer daw and then edit the midi inside the daw.

Suggester looks interesting, and its free! I'm downloading it now.

I also like Chordbot for developing progressions.

Soundprism is a lot of fun.

I think it was on sale for like 10 minutes, and I missed it. It's a shame, because it looks interesting, and with apps I'm extremely cheap, so I probably won't buy it for the full $4.99.

Chordion has a nice, simple layout, but I can't actually get it to communicate with my iPad synths. I tried using about 3-4 different synths, and even though each one recognized Chordion in the MIDI in menus, and Chordion recognized each of the synths, still no Danish. Very frustrating.

But big ups to ecamburn for starting this thread; I'm looking for good chord sequencer apps, and will be trying/buying a few of these.

I like suggester the most to work out progressions. I especially like that I can easily see the notes that make up each chord on 1 screen so I also use it as a chord reference when playing with a keyboard.

ProChords (http://prochords.dk/w/) gets good reviews but I have not tried it. It gives you suggestions/ratings on what chords would best fit your progression.

Suggester us really pretty cool. Two issues with it though:

It isn't actually free. Most of the scales are locked until you do an in-app purchase.

Edit: It does have core midi support after all. I'm not sure why it wasn't showing up for me at first, but now its working fine.

Otherwise, I really like the workflow, and this just might be the only chord tool I need.

I love Chordbot. So much so, I bought it for iPad AND Android - I really enjoy just adding all 7 instrument slots to a progression and e-mailing it back to my system, at which point I can use (or not) any of the 7 midi tracks. The only other one discussed so far that I didn't already own was Rechorder - which I didn't buy originally because of its price, but am waiting for my e-mail receipt as we speak. enChord was another Lemur template I bought when it first appeared, but I still haven't been able to do much with it - on the whole, of the @15-20 progression-type apps that I own, the only ones that get consistent use are Chordbot and ChordMapMidi (which is only useful as a midi chord controller in a more or less "live" environment) but there are tons that are cool to play with and shake up the dust of routine...

I was an early adopter of Chordbank, and as part of that deal, I got upgraded to the 'pay for' version for free. I like that no matter what chord you pick, you can hit the little 'wizard' button, and about a couple hundred chord progressions that use that chord show up, with chord diagrams that actually sound out, so you can hear what the progression sounds like. Also has a tuner

This is one of my favorite features too. To me chord names are nearly meaningless. I like to see the notes.

One thing about suggester I'm not keen on is the limitation of one scale per song. Makes it a bit cumbersome to do key changes in progressions. Chordpolypad doesn't seem to have this limitation so I was attempted. But chordpolypad's library doesn't seem as deep as suggester's (for example it's missing Greek modes) so I didn't pull the trigger.

No portrait mode in Chordbot is a MAJOR deal-breaker for me! Had a look at Suggester as well, and it is pretty basic.

I already have Prochords and found it pretty useless too!

Post

Version 1 of Chordbot was Portrait mode only, and I guess there was enough of a stink about it that it changed in V2 - of course, it also became much more robust. There are some Android sites that still have the 1.12 version available for download, but not sure of how supported it would be. For a (very) short time I re-named the v1.12 app so both would load, but in the end it was just easier to accept running in Landscape - I have so many others that only work that way...

Post

And I have so many apps that run in both ;) TBH, if it was already in portrait, why did the dev simply not leave the option in the app????

Oh well, I guess I can buy something else :)
