i think for most people there is an inherent relativity to such qualitative judgments; "great" has implied qualifications/caveats such as "for the size", "for the price" etc. i don't think anyone is thinking these hold up to some of the monster-gig-uber-sampled pianos, and why would they ?? this is by no means limited to tablets e.g you know that the amount of instruments included in sampletank 3, for 33gig, will result in many compromises. many people still think sampletank 3 sounds "great", but i don' think anyone is under any illusion about the quality as compared to more specialised libraries

the ipad is limited by it's ram, and hdd size. various concessions will have to be made so that these packages can come in at a reasonable size. they also come in at less than the price of a mcdonald's meal, per instrument.

i imagine that those that say it sounds "great", are not saying that it is "the best"

Nope you're wrong we are just mediocre peoples fooled by hype and with very low standards.

But Bmoore will save us and teach us what is good taste.

As I said. Save the "great" for stuff that really is great.
It's like saying the latency on Android was great, just because Android had limits/issues.

And to the people saying they've got a Moog or a B3 or whatnot on your iPad. No, you don't.

If you really wanna go "there" then none of this Virtual Instrument ish will EVER be "great" compared to the beloved Steinway. So give up now I say, nothing to see here, thou shalt burn thy iPads, so let it be written, etc.

as long as we have you to define the exacting qualities of "great", i'm sure we will all learn eventually

BMoore wrote:It's like saying the latency on Android was great, just because Android had limits/issues.
no !! it's "like" saying, "i get a very convincing, and playable, rendition of a piano in my pocket...and it cost peanuts. how great is that !!??"

latency is a problem on android, not a choice. korgs decision to include a 1gb piano was not likely because they couldn't have made it more detailed; rather, that it makes sense that not all users will be running a 128gb ipad, nor that it would be likely that a virtuoso would choose 'module' over much better options.

:dog: :dog: do you mean because bob moog had not personally coded it ?? in as far as it is released by moog, it is a moog. i imagine that you might be basing this on the quality of the synth in question. perhaps you might contact moog and offer suggestions as to how it might be improved. if not, apple are very good about refunding apps that dont live up to customer expectations

i happen to find it one of the most expressive instruments i have played. combine that with the portability, and the price.......gggrrreeeeeaaaaaattttt!!!!!

let me know what moog say when you tell them their moog is not a moog

Post

--BMoore, my first synth was a Synthi AKS so I guess I know what synths are and I never owned one but a friend of mine played in a band with me and he owned a real B-3 with 2 Leslie 122's so I know what a real B-3 is. I'm not fooled and yes I also owned a Minimoog and a few Arps.
If I am excited er...giddy about the ability to closely replicate the sounds of these sometimes heavy and often undependable instruments I do hope you'll forgive me. I'm happy that you're so familiar with these famous instruments that you'd never be fooled by them, you must be so proud of yourself but my audiences don't have your expertise.
My iPad, Kurzsweil and Yamaha MX seem to fool a lot of people who aren't so concerned about being fooled as they are being entertained. I'm very happy and hope someday to read that you are too.

So any product from Moog is "a Moog"?!

I can tell right now you, that the Moog company will never say that there is "a Moog" on the iPad. Unless, like you, they define every product they make/license "a Moog". Not the Arturia apps/synths either.

Fooling and entertaining people that doesn't care/know is not a very good guideline, is it?
It just shows that the giddyness of wanting to say you've got a Moog in your pocket, to cluless people, instead of owning up to and have the integrity to say otherwise, is too strong.

And I know plenty of cluless people owning Moogs, Hammonds, CS-80s that you could fool/entertain with a Gameboy.

I'm not saying that there is no value or entertainment in the Korg or Moog-like products. I enjoy them too. But let's just not pretend they're more than they are.

"So any product from Moog is "a Moog"?"

it's obvious but with sophism we always have to reinvent the wheel, dont' we ?

"I can tell right now you, that the Moog company will never say that there is "a Moog" on the iPad."

from Moog website :

"Animoog, powered by Moog’s new Anisotropic Synth Engine (ASE), is the first professional polyphonic synthesizer designed for the iPad."

And?! Come back when you have something new or interesting to write.

I'm leaving this sub-discussion with a comment on the original topic, and that is that Module is still not good. And the demos popping up is just confirming this even more.
