By Eric's request, here's the basic diagram for partial coil split (credits to Brinsley Schwartz for the idea and http://www.guitarelectronics.com/catego ... _diagrams/ for the diagram I modified):
Hope that helps,
susiwong
(from my original post)In case your split positions could do with more balls, no problem, insert a capacitor into your split wire leading to ground (credits to Brinsley Schwartz for the great idea).
- A coil split shortens one of your two coils to ground, right ?
- A cap in series acts like a HP filter, so what happens ?
- The coil split & cap only shortens higher frequencies to ground, the crossover frequency being determined by the value of the cap.
- High frequencies are single coil, @ frequencies below fc the PU remains humbucking, even retaining some hum reduction capabilities.
- Cost for the mod maybe 50 ct for a handful of caps to find out the ideal value ...
- A good starting point for experiments would be the 10nF to 50nF range, same types you use for passive tone control.
Hope that helps,
susiwong

Varitone rotary switch
(from http://www.blueguitar.org/)
Most players don't like it, though it's quite useable for soul type backbeat "chicks" (not what you're thinking now ) or background parts ...
Ymmv,
susiwong
The Schecter cap/resistor treble bleed mentioned above also works fine, btw !

Thanks, susiwong! Here are some threads I found about turning the tone control into a passive high pass filter, which is what I'll be doing next:

A preamp booster that Hink loves, the Alembic Stratoblaster, is currently on sale for 10% off and you'll get an additional 15% discount by entering the coupon code eoss2011:
http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/com ... uct_id=131
If you order it without the enclosure (which is what Hink does since he installs these things in his guitars), the end price is $18.87.

I've been studying the wiring ideas on this blog: http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/
Not sure if it repeats any of the links above.
For a beginner like me the diagrams and explanations there are very helpful. I'm currently building a single pickup guitar and thinking about the options.

It's great! I definitely want to try the Charvel-strat mod some day:knockman wrote:I've been studying the wiring ideas on this blog: http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/

These two adjustable treble bleeds could be cool:
http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... d-mod.html
http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... r-mod.html
I kind of dig on the volume drop switch, although it might be better to put in a volume-tone-bypass instead:
http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... r-mod.html
I really love the idea of using the volume pot as a tone switch, especially since I'm planning to turn all the tone pots on my PRS's into second volume pots:

My tip - If you have a HSS outfitted guitar, forget about the two Single-Coils, You can leave them as is but not wired up or flip them over and screw them down to sort of fill the gaps (Thats what i did). Treat yourself to an EMG 85 and you then have a metal tone machine with the EMG '18 Volt mod' already applied since your sending all the juice from the battery to just the one pickup. Totally bitchin' setup with 1xHB now plus a tone and volume control, Leaving in the 3-way selector is optional if you want a 'kill-switch' of sorts

Dean aka 'Nekro Butcher' (I wouldn't listen to me if i was me either)
On a more serious note, this is another manufacturer website. However it has good clips of each pickup so that someone looking to swap out stock pickups to give you an idea of what different models and magnets sound like:

Plus a useful forum, Although nothing on the scale of the Seymour Duncan forums! http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php

Cheers knockman, Its a good one, Well laid out/no clutter like some sites, Cheers man Its going to be the default one i use when/if i want to do something to one of my guitars pickup/control setup without endless debates about junk to distractknockman wrote:I've been studying the wiring ideas on this blog: http://guitarwiring.blogspot.com/

In a tele I've assembled I've put in a volume pot with switch (push/push). The switch performs a total by pass of the tone and volume controls. So the output of the selection switch is connected directly to the output jack.
The switch switches the ground wires for both pots (volume and tone) and short out the pots on the hot wire. (hope that makes sense).

Marc I have a similar setup in one of my Jackson DK-2's, Its a tiny 2-way mini toggle that takes the volume and tone out, Mostly I use it for the bridge humbucker as you know I do not faff around That Jackson sports a pair of Bare Knuckle Warpigs, Bought them as soon as they were released. Its my second 'goto' guitar, Obviously for sweep picking whilst tapping also but mostly sweeping around I need the neck pickup to have some additional control over but personally on the bridge its mostly all systems go. So yeah total sense although I wouldn't fancy drawing out a diagram, Worth it IMveryhumbleHO if you are similar as in having the bridge always full on for example but obviously allows alot more flexability than just that
