My favourite compressor plugins have always been those that came with the Mackie plugin set that came with Tracktion 2. They just do exactly as you expect with no messing about.

Now that I've gone fully to 64-bit, these plugins are now unavailable without using jBridge. I don't really want to have to use jBridge because it means that I have to run Tracktion in Adminstrator mode, which has its own annoyances (like disabling dragging-and-dropping WAVs from Explorer).

Every other plugin I have got tries to be clever and the output often doesn't match what I expect from the set values. I don't want it to be "musical". I don't want "transparency". I don't want it to think that it knows better than me. I just want it to reduce the gain of an input signal according to the values I've set when it goes over my threshold. I also want the attack time to be able to go down to zero (or close to 1ms) and show me the amount of gain reduction in realtime.

Does anyone know of any compressor plugins that just do exactly as the Mackie plugins do?

Hi there,

I dont have an exact counterpart for your favourite comp to offer, but here are 2 really viable options.

http://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-kotelnikov/

The latter one has a big brother (commercial, 50 bucks) which is also worth a look if you want to spend a bit of money. In case you would do so, I highly recommend taking a look at: http://www.toneboosters.com/trackessentials/

The track essentials bundle consists of several plugins (especialy a good comp) which are worth giving a shot.

for a nofuzz, simple compressor, that just does what it should by the numbers, i'd recommend toneboosters track essentials bundle:

http://www.toneboosters.com/tb-trackessentials-bundle/

the compressor from the bundle is worth the price alone (20 €):

the rest of the bundle is very helpful too for simple straightforward work, together with some specialties.
there are demos available.

+1 for Toneboosters; Jeroen is a genius.

The "bang to buck" ratio of the Track Essentials bundle is unmatched.

I agree with all of the suggestions so far. Toneboosters and TDR are great picks. I use Kotelnikov GE the most, but Toneboosters Buscompressor is also very, very good.

The freshly repainted Tracktion website has a new set of 16 plug-ins called the DAW Essentials Collection, including a compressor. The whole lot is all yours for $99 - special offer - normally $150.

How about DC8C 2? Excellently priced at 20 Euros, and there's a ton of tweakability on offer in the 'expert' mode (you might find the 4 'easy' modes land somewhere in "think it knows better than you" territory). Attack/release times can be ultra short to the point where the plug acts more like a distortion/clipper. Expert mode may look unduly complex compared to the Mackie compressor you like, but if you're looking to recreate the behaviour of that compressor/*any* specific 'simple' compressor, you'll likely need all the tweakability you can get. http://klanghelm.com/contents/products/DC8C/DC8C.php
