Sample Modeling has released "The Cello" and it's perfect!:

Like "The Viola", it uses their exclusive SWAM technology that provides the accuracy of sampling without any of the pitch-shift or dynamic-switching artifacts. In fact, the sound is fully malleable in pitch, loudness and timbre (bow position or other parameter). And the sound is just beautiful! Plus it's an easy setup:

1) In LinnStrument, set "MIDI Mode = One Channel", Bend Range = 12 and Loudness/Z = Channel Pressure.
2) In "The Cello", click "Reset", then click "Default LinnStrument".

The setup is also explained in the "MPE/Expressive Sound Generators" page, Notable "non-MPE" tab.

Dear Roger,
I just discovered FingerFiddle and like the arco/pizzicato expression options. Is there a possible setup for LinnStrument to do similar things with The Viola/Cello? Maybe using split mode with faders to control the bow movement and position and switch to pizzicato?

Hi Chick,
Yes, Sample Modeling's The Cello has a wide variety of performance techniques including the ability to bow the strings from a mod wheel, which you can do from LinnStrument's Low Row. However, I never use that because the bowing sounds great without it and it is somewhat cumbersome to have to move your finger back and forth constantly while playing. But the main issue is the complete absence of any of the undesirable artifacts of samples like noticeably bad pitch shifting and dynamic level switching, plus you get the ability to use Y-axis for bow position. You really have to play it to understand that it's in an entirely different league than samplers.
