"Morphing" between modulations?
Is the only way to do a volume cross-fade between the outputs of each modulation? Or is there some other technique?

It depends on what you define as the 'midpoint', how you deconstruct a signal determines what you can draw a line through, You could for example, modulate the crossfader itself. You could cross a midpoint of silence. You could use the absolute difference of signals a and b as the midpoint. You could a use the brightness of a visualization at a given pixel using x and y as inputs as the output. Modulation is a key to moving into higher order.
Try to create a network of modulations. In FLPatcher this is easy. Use Formula Controller (A,B,C) to generate ramp waves frac(songtime), as well as cross faders (a * c) + (b * (1-c), drive ramp output through envelope controller or x/y/z controller to make your own custom lfo shapes, and then network this together in a large network with many layers.. and modulate the order up through the roof and your listeners into the next dimension.
