Questions about iPad music app development

Hello all, I have an idea and I'm trying to get a sense of how difficult it would be to implement. Basically, I'm trying to get a sense of if it's possible to create an iPad music app that is written to interact closely with a specific hardware MIDI controller. I'm talking deep integration comparable to Native Instruments Maschine on Mac and Windows.

Does anyone know that type of hardware/software integration is even possible on the iPad?

If you haven't already guessed, I'm not a programmer, I'm a ley-person with an idea trying to get a sense of what the scale of work/money would be to execute my concept.
