Hi.

Is it possible to create automation 'clips' instead of doing it within the Piano roll?

I find it much easier that way instead of having to do that duplicate thing.

Cheers.

Yes, if you mean recording some automation to a track - after already having recorded the VST 'main' track with note on/off and velocity?
You know you can add up to 8 favorite VST parameters to a controller map per VST track?
This feature got moved away from the 'big' mixer strip where it was in 2.7 to the MIDI In component in 3.0 (somewhat hidden).
Go to 'Modular' view and double click the MIDI In there. Leave that MIDI In window open and change back to 'Tracks' view and select the track where you want to add automation to.
In the open MIDI In window you'll now see quite at the top left 'Edit' before indication of instrument - track name.
Click on this 'Edit' on the MIDI In component and - if you haven't yet done Setup CC, do that first ('Setup CC' is on the right side of the MIDI In component window).
I hope you'll soon see how it works.
If Setup CC is done, click on the '+' on the left side above the keyboard and a first VST's parameter name gets displayed. Click on this name to choose the one you're interested in from a list of all available VST parameters.
Eg. something like FltCutoff. This parameter is now assigned to the first controller as set up in 'Setup CC'.
Finish setting up favorite VST parmeters by pressing 'Done' in that MIDI In component window.
And now back to the track.
Expand it and click on the '+' icon on the bottom left of the expanded track to select that parameter that you just setup to be the first favorite. Now press record and move the controller. You should see now the envelope change as you turn the controller (and of course also hear the changes)
Tip: You may want to turn of 'Looping' before recording automation...
I hope this was somehow understandable...
Good luck!
