U.D.O. - Go Back To Hell

Good call!

Not only is UDO the coolest Metaller on the planet, he is somehow also starting to resemble a fine wine - just getting better with age. I expect him to hit peak at 90 and then just drop dead from a bizarre gardening accident or something. At the same time, his band just seem to get younger and better. If all Metal was like this, I'd grow my hair long again. Wait a minute, it is long. Never mind. Maybe I'll just shave it all off like him.

Just had to put this in:

Probably one of the top five voices in metal.

1: Ozzie.
2: Klaus Meine
3: Dio
4: Biff Byford
5: Udo Dirkschneider

The man is a legend.

Never say die was very poorly accepted at the time it came out. I think all the Dorian jazz scales that Iommi was noodling with did people's heads in a bit.

But the songwriting is top. The bass playing on this track is truly exceptional. I have about three different tracks ripped from it. It is like the Funky Drummer of Bass Lines. Geezer is the geezer. Bill Ward, subtle little jazzman as he was just holds it down, never overplaying. Sonically the producing could have been better. But excellent production overall with regared to the balance and tone of the whole album. A difficult feat with its disparate parameters.

Jeebnizz, I'm sounding like Patrick Bateman describing Phil Collins.

I'll leave it at that.

2: Klaus Meine:

Miss you -

A cliche yes. Could have chose better, but I chucked this one in because it pretty much has exactly the same chord progression as Simple Man by Lynryd Skynyrd, that you linked to earlier, Aloysius.

Still, if it doesn't give you a tingle, no hope for you.

This man has just done too much excellent work to try and find one thing that defines.

It is like asking: what is the best Van Gogh? It is not possible to answer without personal prejudice. And we are keeping the comments short and sweet here on this thread. Well, some of us are. Sorry.

3: Dio

Rainbow - Stargazer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ble0pQHUb8c

Arch rival of Ozzie. No surprise they both fronted the best metal/rock band ever - Sabbath. They all played with each other. NO combination was left unexplored. The ONLY thing that has not been done is Deep Purple with Ozzy singing. My god, what a gig that would be. Can you imagine it? Ozzy singing Smoke On The Water, with Deep Purple? Blackmore back on guitar. f**k. Then again, like Pink Floyd without Richard Wright, it would mean nothing without Jon Lord. Like Sabbath without Bill Ward. A shallow hull. This was our life. This was our time.

Check out Dio singing at the end:

Look at my flesh and bone
Now, look, look, look, look,
Look at his tower of stone
I see a rainbow rising
Look there, on the horizon
And I'm coming home, I'm coming home, I'm coming home

Time is standing still
He gave back my will
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Going home
I'm going home

My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
But it's not home
But it's not home
Ooh

Take me back
He gave me back my will
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

Going home
I'm going home

My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
But it's not home
But it's not home
Ooh

4: Biff Byford

West Yorkshire has a lot to answer for. But Biff isn't one of them.

Saxon - Wheels Of Steel -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwKRyizwEKo

The closest Britain ever got to AC/DC.

Listen to this track. Tell me it does not sound like f**king AC/DC with Bon Scott in its prime. Angus tone. Malcolm backbeat. Scott howl. f**k, I don't think they even recognised it themselves. f**k, I don't think I realised till just now.

Saw them at Donnington decades ago on the bill with Uriah Heep and Status Quo. And Hawkwind. Someone threw a bottle of piss at Biff, midsong, and he halted all proceedings. I don't think the rest of the band quite knew what was going on, but they were well rehearsed enough for the eventuality. He said: 'No f**ker throws bottles of piss on my stage!'. Crowd roared, band started playing, no one threw any more bottles of piss. What a f**king Yorkshire geezer.

If I was to do a tribute band and cover this song, I would call it 'Bottles of Piss'.

U.D.O. - I GIVE AS GOOD AS I GET

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_u_q1dZpFY

Loving Udo's face in this video. If you subscribe to the school of Chris Randall, as I do, then you will believe that all videos are a scam at worst, and a desperate attempt at promotion at best. This video makes me suspend my disbelief. As any good song does.

And never under estimate those guitar players. The solo on this is exceptional.

I am unique.
This is the way I am for me.

Thankyou Aloysius for inspiring this little mind storm for me.
