three things - Rebirth 338 has some wild tunes for free - easily downloadable from www.rebirthmuseum.com and ipad/ipod/iphone version has an archive of songs at www.propellerheads.se - second, investigate the 'demo scene' for mods - .xm .s3m .it .mod files are free and there is an amazing variety of sounds in 'the scene' www.scene.org is a good starting point.. also make note of this location: ftp://ftp.rave.ca/pub/modules/Fasttracker%202/ <- very fast FTP source of mod music - i think that the best player for mod music is XM Play - http://support.xmplay.com/ <- supports ASIO 96khz 32bit
and thirdly - check out my music - especially my older stuff from pre 2007 - i have some strange tunes recorded!

This 1999 release has some of the weirdest, most wonderful tracks I've ever listened to. Highly recommended!

Well, if you are insistent upon that distinction, I personally don't think anything comes close to what classical composers were doing in the 50s and 60s. In the experimental strain, I would say John Cage and the so-called New York School consisting of Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and Christian Wolf and lesser artists who spun off that way of thinking. From the avant-garde strain, I would probably have to say one of the following composers, depending upon how sharply you want to define "notes": Iannis Xenakis, Gyoergy Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Pierre Boulez (I personally give my nod to the first three of those five); I might also include Toru Takemitsu to that list (just saw Varese mentioned earlier, good nomination).halfstep wrote:Hello,

Of course, that assumes you want to look at systems of notes that abandon functional harmony. If not, and you want to look at musicians who were doing equally impressive things, you'd really have to start looking at bebop artists and other jazz musicians, like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, etc.

There's a scene of local metal bands in Japan that play holes in the wall and are kind of stuck in the 80s....that's some of the weirder stuff I've experienced...

I'm not sure that it's weird. I have grown quite comfortable with it over the last 34 yearsJJBiener wrote:I would have to go with Frank Zappa particulary his instrumental atonal work.
