That's what we should say after watching every video in this thread. Try to keep it focused on the individual player, e.g., we've all seen Led Zeppelin perform Stairway to Heaven or Frank Zappa playing weird complicated shit, start your own thread for that.
Ok, maybe this guy is famous, but I've never seen him before. I always cringe when a youtube video has a title like this, but, this was actually pretty good.

I think he's pretty well known among performers, but there are so few videos of him playing.
It's a pity I will never be able to see him perform live anymore...

I liked this, although, I confess, I wasn't impressed with the drumming. Not that it's bad, it just didn't move me.jancivil wrote:http://youtu.be/-81ymTFPBXQ?t=1m27s
But, my question for you, and I'd like it if you'd respond in as much detail as you feel that you have time for, is why do you think that it's "more than great."

Awesome, I really liked at some points, e.g. about 3:30, that you could hear the clicking of the keys, it added something to the performance.ccDuckett wrote:Polka this ain't..

But I don't like to explain things like that. If you aren't 'moved' by the drumming (let alone 'I wasn't impressed'), where the guitarist evidently is... I don't think I will benefit from being drawn into a discussion or argument. Staking a claim swaying someone to some music via language isn't my thing at all, it seems pretty useless. I went to help myself with it once with you but I think Rastop doesn't need my help. In the context here this feels the same as needing to explain Hendrix to someone quite sated with Chet Atkins, been there/done that (specifically).ghettosynth wrote:I liked this, although, I confess, I wasn't impressed with the drumming. I think the felicities of everything in this is self-evident to someone sensible to it. I will say I expected some resistance from you, but I shared it anyway; this guy is fantastic and no one knows about him. These videos have a few hundred views only.

And of course, there is a discussion anyway, just to clarify. I'm not interested in arguing with you at all. You should take my request at face value.jancivil wrote:But I don't like to explain things like that. Ah, as I suspected, you misread. I'm not asking you to "sway" me, I agree it's useless, and you won't be able to at all. My experience of music is largely independent of my understanding of it. You could use all the superlatives in the world and my opinion wouldn't change. I wasn't asking for that. I was asking for you to share your music expertise. What about it technically, impacts your musical experience, it's clear that your moved by it, so I don't care about that, but your words were "it's beyond great." Is that just an expression of taste, or, are you asserting that, based on your music experience, that it has properties that reflect an understanding of music from the performers that you respect? If the former, so be it, I'm sure I've said similar things without any particular meaning, if the latter, what are the "musical" properties of the performance that you think are important for something to be "beyond great", either generically, or within the genre.Staking a claim swaying someone to some music via language isn't my thing at all, it seems pretty useless.
That's because you project too much. I was asking for what the KVR readership felt were great performances in this thread, and you should take my request at face value. In fact, that's just general advice from me to you, I generally mean exactly what I say, and little more, modulo my ability to express myself with the necessary degree of precision.I will say I expected some resistance from you, but I shared it anyway; this guy is fantastic and no one knows about him.
He is, if we're talking about the guitar player, fantastic. As far as the drumming, my perception could be as much a function of the live sound as the playing, but, I've just experienced what I feel is much more interesting drumming in similar contexts.
But, to be clear, I'm talking about both the guitar playing and the overall piece in general, I'm not really asking you to try and sway my opinion on the drum sound, but, feel free, if you desire, to share what you think makes the drumming work in the context of the piece.

This guy - The best version I've ever heard of "James" even better then the original by Pat Metheney.

Love how he slips in "with a little help from my friends" lick and "here comes the sun' transposed.

Disclaimer, Jeff and I have conversed before. I did an artist review about him. He's a really nice guy and has an amazing approach whether playing a stick, war, ztar or other instrument.
