Don't be ashamed to admit it if you like them too Currently I think my top 10 (in no particular order) would be:
An American in Paris - imho the highpoint of the 'classic' American musical form
West Side Story - the one that broke the 'classic' musical mould and created something all of its own
All that Jazz - my favourite Bob Fosse film
Cabaret
Sweet Charity - the plot is a bit thin but it has some of the best music and dance numbers
Jesus Christ Superstar - the only ALW I can stomach - the singing is just extraordinary and powerful
Carousel - my fave Roger's and Hammerstein - and the least cheesy
Phantom of the Paradise - an underrated classic
Fiddler on the roof - makes me cry but full of life and heart
My Fair Lady
actually I might have to add Carmen Jones to make 11 - Dorothy Dandridge

I really only know 2 of them:
Fiddler on the Roof & Jesus Christ Superstar.
Fiddler is amazingly well written...
I haven't seen JSC since I was in my late teens (a long time ago) but I identified with it at that point in time. Not sure how much I'd like it these days.

I'd like to have seen the original stage show - I'm a huge Bob Fosse fan, but the casting in the film rather put me off - maybe I will try it sometimeosiris wrote: Chicago

On The Town
One of my favorite movies, period.
Box up, Battery down.
Ann Miller is the crush of my life.

Hee, pretty much the first ones that popped into my head.osiris wrote:Singing In The Rain ... South Pacific ... Hedwig and the Angry Inch
I'd add:
Wizard of Oz (got songs...)
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Nightmare Before Christmas
Yeah, obvious ones but that's me and musicals.
I could add Grease; cracking songs but a bloody awful story. But still better than Mama f***ing Mia...

I wasn't thinking of animations but that does have some wonderful music - reminds me a lot of parts of the Threepenny Opera musicallyGaryG wrote:

I was just thinking of plays/movies where the characters (real or animated) regularly burst into song to advance the story.

I'm not really a fan of musicals, although I did see Jesus Christ Superstar but omg that was 40 years ago!
Enjoyed Nightmare Before Christmas, and Sweeny Todd.
and
A Hard Days Night! why not?!
