been trying various relaxation/mindfulness apps but I can't stand them, I just can't listen to some dick droning on about letting go of my tension bla bla bla, but the typical sort of new agey relaxation music I just find unlistenable as well. What would you recommend? I want something that will relax me but without making me just want to turn it off.
You sound quite angry/jittery.

I would try meditating if I were you, but actually investigating what meditation really is.

My experience is that there is very little that will 'relax you'. It's a process that you have to find yourself, and meditation is one of the best ways of doing that. The aim of meditation isn't relaxation, but the results are often relaxation.

Years ago I used Eno's 'Thursday afternoon' for that.

This is good music for insomnia (and by an up-and-coming young artist):

A possibility Jeff Fayman & Robert Fripp: A temple in the clouds, it is still on name your price at Bandcamp:

The 30 minutes+ title track is like a hard wall of ambience, I have fallen asleep to it many times.

A couple of years later they added Steve Roach to the mix and created possibly the most sublime track ever: Year of the horse

It takes my mind to peaceful unconsciouness places

So far this and the Basinski seem to work for me better than the Robert Rich stuff. I think it's because they are more minimalistic and tend to repeat structures more whereas Rich improvises too much and is too busy because of this. So I'm looking for more less busy music now. Maybe I should try some of Eliane Radigues music for this?

This is the sort of music I think works best for me for sleep - minimalist but unlike much minimalism (eg Glass) also uncluttered and static - more open and organic, reduced variations, meditative:
Oöphoi's music can be characterized as being static, organic and minimalistic. It has an overall solid and monolithic feel to it, often integrated in a meditative and spiritual context. Created by using synths, singing bowls, flutes, and processed voices, his recordings have relatively slight harmonic variations.

I'm wondering if people doing this more 'organic' ambient style would be for you, people like Marcus Fischer, Taylor Deupree, Loscil...

I find the site Headphone Commute a goldmine for styles like this.

I made a series of audio tracks for myself to block out noise and help me sleep. Added binaural waves at delta and theta frequencies which I think really helped as well. Only bad thing is that the best effect is with headphones so you have to lay on your back. They also gave me vivid dreams for a while which was fantastic while it lasted, but the effect wore off after a few months. I've loaded some 256K MP3s for download. My gf thinks they sound a bit creepy. Meh.

Thanks - I can't wear headphones in bed as I sleep best on my side and worst on my back but I find having speakers playing as quietly as possible works best for a lot of this stuff anyway (in fact Robert Rich and Morton Feldman both advise this for their music)

David Sylvian's "Gone To Earth", especially the second disc is heavenly for slumber.

I mean with track titles like "Silver Moon Over Sleeping Steeples" I know I am in for a good nocturnal ride :)

Either that or the beer

Yes, this works for me as well. I use my own music, which I don't want to share, but, from what you've described, it wouldn't work for you anyway.

In any case, find the sound has to be just loud enough to drown out, or blend with, other background noises, the fridge, the wind, animals outside, etc.

Incredible

Not sure what to call this - seems like bits of jazz, electronica, ambient, musique concrete and modern classical all rolled into one
