foo_midi and Cog for Mac OS X support sflist files with powerful preset control. You list presets in order of priority, with lower lines overriding higher lines, as files are loaded and processed in the order specified in the file.

When specifying a relative or absolute path to a bank inside the sflist, it may be preceded with a string of commands, followed by a vertical pipe. Where one or more commands may be specified, separated by ampersands.

<command>&<another command>&<etc>|thefile.sf2pack

The supported commands at this time are c<channel number>, which limits a preset to just that channel number, or any other channel numbers specified in the same command set. Or, p[bank,]<patch number>=[bank,]<patch number>, where the patch and optional bank number on the left of the equals sign is the target patch to be overridden, while the patch/bank on the right are the preset within the specified file.

So, it certainly is possible to make up an sflist file of all your favorite presets from various banks, all assembled together in one conglomeration, all without editing any of the specified banks.

I will try to add this support to the BASSMIDI Driver soonish. Adding the command specification support to the GUI will be a pain, I think I'll just make mudlord do that.

Thanks for building up, cleaning it and taking time sharing your huge soundfont pack.
Much appreciated! :tu:

Oh dear... is it you who I think you are?... s'cuse me... kode54. :)

Oh my... So.. you are one of the programmers of mythical BassMIDI driver!!

I feel so privileged for having you replying to me here, and I so happy to know that that I feel like I can spontaneously combust, now that I know who you are. Thanks for replying to me here. I thought you were a very intelligent geek of the highest order, like a friend of mine called Ultimate Doomer. :)

Knowing that I updated the video of my BassMIDI driver link in the description of my Musyng Kite youtube video, as I had a mudlor.info domain that doesn't work for me now. This is the new link for anyone interested in this essential utility:

http://www.kode54.net/bassmididrv/

That being said, BassMIDI driver, the new version, doesn't work with Noteworthy Composer 2.51a -I use Windows 8.1, if that matters-. Plus I've had an issue with either BassMIDI driver or VirtualMIDI synth, where one of them seemed to remove MS Wavetable Synth from the output devices list. Not that I miss it much but I used it for Noteworthy Composer.

Again, it's sheer awesomeness having you here.

(more on the rest of your post later, I might need some files to get a point across)

A feature like that would be absolutely amazing to have! I would add to this having the ability to select from at least 5 to 10 favourite presets of the same instrument from different soundfonts.

The same instrument can sound incredible with a song but it might not sound as good as other variations from different soundfonts.

Some examples featuring the same instrument, the Distortion Guitar:

Corneria: The Distortion Guitar of the Roland SC-55 (25MB) soundfont :) sounds really beautiful in this song.

Grabbag, the original and full version
-thanks Ultimate Doomer-: Arachno soundfont 8) is a no-brainer here, great guitar for this song, I don't find any guitar coming close.

https://db.tt/FeP0gvTw

Camila - Alejate de mi: In this song Musyng Kite guitar shines the most :ud: -starting at the 1:50 minutes mark, the guitar is there before but the sound I am talking about in particular sounds there starts around 1:50 in, I didn't find one that sounds that fine with that last note (Roland SC-55's would be a close second)-

Turbo OutRun - Keep your Heart version 2: This BEAUTIFUL song is unmatched when it sounds with the Jazman's Distortion Guitar.

lol! -weeps-. I admit it, I cried. -with laughter- :D

Aside from that, I do keep in mind that I don't know how hard it would be to implement something like that, but I guess that after all the utilities and hip and cool stuff you created til now, it shouldn't be that complicated.

Cheers

Hello Cose,
Thank you for you remarkable work! The result is wonderful!
There are indeed, noticeable improvements between Evanessence2 and Mysung Kite.
I'm far from having listened to all the instruments in this new version.
For preset 073, have you already tried the Kurzweil flute?
Best regards,
Marc

You're welcome. Thanks for your kind comments.

I never ever tried that flute, although there won't be updates for the soundfont from now on. But I shall try to find the one you mentioned in order to check it out.

Talking of which, the Shakuhachi in Musyng Kite has a flute layer which is as good if not better than the flute I used for the soundfont, but I just crammed it in there as a background sound to enhance the Shakuhachi, although it is attenuated by 40dB, which is a lot.

If you give it more presence and use it for the main flute it could give nice results, although probably not as good as the Kurzweil flute you mention -I think I've seen it mentioned some time ago, so it is probably praised and held in high regard-, it can get the job done.

See yah' Marc :)

Oddly enough (odd indeed, as XMPlay is the most flawless player I've found to date and even supports things like the portamento which is absent in like 98% of the DAWs and MIDI players out there), and it never ever failed on me, XMPlay seems to be bugged with this file. I am very surprised, since it always plays everything you throw at it to a fault (in fact, I always use XMPlay to compare when I seem to find a flaw in other DAWs).

It is the Jurassic Park main theme. Firstly with XMPlay the song kicks in okay, but it sounds very faintly when it starts. Then after the 1:27 mark -or so- the sound cuts at times. This happens with every single soundfont; professional, free or commercial ones.

I've uploaded a video of the song sounding on the SD50, and found that by sheer chance afterwards when playing around with the SMF.

Try the "Stuff" build, which is always the latest version.

http : // un4seen.com / stuff /

and either xmp-midi.dll or xmp-midi.zip, I'm not sure. If both exist, use whichever is reported as newest by the server.

Thanks for the help, kode54. I tried to go to the stuff build page but the link doesn't work for me. I have the latest build of both, XMPlay and XMP MIDI. Still, I re-downloaded them from the page. The XMP MIDI file was zipped.

The "bug" cropped up again, and it always happens.

Talking of XMP, I wonder if I can play MIDI files on XMPlay using hardware modules -I am going to combine hardware and software from now on, and while very flexible, software alone lacks that little extra only hardware can do, imo, and plan on getting more hardware as time goes on- too, since VanBasco is a very good program for that but I'd happily switch to XMP if I was given the opportunity to do so, 'cos it always plays the music you throw at it nicely and it is the best at program changes and using them.

OK finally starting to mess about with the K5 conversion. Went with a bright sort of musical wallpaper thinking that it fits the fun of soundfonts. What you think?

Oh lord, I sadly cannot try it since I don't have Kontact for now. :/ I counted and I have 7 DAWs/sequencers -gotta say I am not rich, I've been purchasing them over time (Sonar 8.5 LE was free with the SD50) 'til I thought I have enough good tools for the job- but I can't load the file into them. Hopefully I will have Kontact 5 in the future.

I will admit to being fascinated by hardware modules, which are priority for me though. Software like soundfonts and libraries can potentially give excellent results combined with hardware, I think.

Since I don't have Kontact for now, what I think is interesting is having a screenshot of your Kontakt 5 wallpaper. Is there a way to see it without having Kontact? I've seen screenshots of the program sometimes and so far, out of the few I've seen, some looked pretty cool

The interface reminds me of a very fast and colourful superhighway. It looks very uplifting and "nimble" in my eyes. Seeing that the real message behind it is showing how fun certain soundfonts can be, I think it kinda gets the job done.

For those interested on fine standards and General MIDI, I've made a video showing the differences between General MIDI 2 and GS (and General MIDI 1).

The richness, fullness and expressiveness of the sound is much better on General MIDI 2, and there are other differences too: :phones: :phones:

Hi Sarcyan. I saw your post and brought it to the attention of the XMPlay developer. The glitch with the Jurassic Park theme file - and other of Gary Wachtel's sequences - appears to be fixed with an update to the midi plugin. Please see this XMPlay forum post (http://www.un4seen.com/forum/?topic=5337.msg111370#msg111370) for the discussion and location to get the new "stuff" version.
