Hi all,
I am having a nasty problem over here trying to download the soundfont. First off, the previews I have heard on You Tube sound nice. Can't wait to try it! Now for the problem.
I am visually impaired, so when going on mediafire, I cannot use the visual captcha images, so instead I have to use the audio ones. Those are about as hard as a brick wall. I couldn't even get one satisfactory result, and I can't even imagine what it would be like to do 4 captchas, one for each part. So, is there another place to get it? If worse comes to worse, maybe somebody could host it temporarily for a day or two? It doesn't matter how it is hosted, so long as I can get it downloaded.
One time I managed to download one of the parts without it asking for a captcha, but the download stopped at 59 megs, stupid me for not using a download manager... Anyway any help is greatly appreciated! Am anxious to check this out.
Thanks.

Oh brother. This sounds like a real mess to find a workaround. Wish I could help. I certainly love giving advice, but for this... I don't think I have any. Good luck.

EDIT: If only you could download it in a Cybercafe or a similar place, it should be really fast, and having the cybercafe employee helping you.

Another option would be downloading one link at a time, but I don't know if this will work.

In my PC the first download link NEVER shows the captcha image, it's not necessary to download the file.

HOWEVER, a second link will show the captcha and asks me to write it.

So if you just delete the Internet cache and temporary files, cookies, etc, and you download a file at a time, delete cache, rinse and repeat, it might work.

I could ask Synthfont webmaster to host the file temporarily but he agreed with me in keeping the files on Mediafire, and he is on vacation.

Try those options I mentioned, and see how it goes. It's all I can do.

Stay safe and take care of yourself. Cheers Ray

Hi,
Don't worry about it. Seems if I wait about six hours between downloads it let me download them all without a kaptcha. Re-captcha, the captcha generating service they use, is pretty infamous for being difficult anyway, and the captcha solving sollutions for visually impaired aren't any good at solving them. I let them know of these problems (especially the audio one) but I wouldn't be surprised if nothing was done... heck I dont even know if they're possible with site.
Anyway back to the soundfont, I personally have seen better. It has nice sounds but it probably won't beat your favorite soundfont as an all-aroundGM bank. There are just too many things that just seem to make it more of a specialty bank for me. That's just my personal opinion though, so no yelling at me please? LOL.

What's with the overuse of reverb in the demo???

Post

You know, I thought the same thing, but I"m used to it. Seems one of my friends think that much is necessary, sometimes even more than that. Luckily though I talked him out of it.

thanks for a great youtube, loved it! Especially the Star Wars score, gorgeous. Seemed strange to hear a 2GB library on youtube...rather like when we offered to show President a recording of his 1883 inauguration in HDTV format, and he said he'd love to see it, please send a VHS tape.

Does the download include the MIDI score? ;)

Post

Lol President Clinton was inaugurated 1983 not 1883. It just feels like it was 1883.

Whatever problems people hve with captcha, it's inadvisable to disable it regardless what people say, or there could be complaints from the ISP vendor. My own ISP gives me one of those 'unlimited FTP downloads' with the usual cautions. If folks have trouble downloading elsewhere I'm glad to transfer it via FTP on individual request, but for 2GB, I don't think I can make it generally available.

Also a Windows7 version of the Fluidsynth Soundfront player is available on individual request. Currently the implementation is minimal, with detailed controls hidden.

Post

Not to go off topic, but what is the interface of the Fluidsynth soundfont player like? Hopefully it's not just sourcecode but is an actual program I can run. I'd be interested in at least giving it a try, even though Fluidsynth is not my favorite. Again, sorry for the off topic discussion, but I am curious. Maybe there is another place to discuss it? I doubt it would work with the musica soundfont!
Thanks.

Hi Ray, please send private message saying what you need, not public discussion on that, thank you.

For the future, you may want to check out jdownloader. It is a download manager that has built in captcha images for a lot of places. Its freeware/opensource, and may be of use due to your vision. It will show the captcha if its not capable of decifering that specific site, but they update somewhat frequently.

Good luck with getting it.

thanks  but there is no sfpack for mac, so the soundfont can never be un"zipped"

it would have been cool to post a 7-zip (great compression) or rar version ..

as it stands i just downloaded something i will never be able to extract..

would have loved to use this in reason :)

Post

great news for mac people..

wine bottler works perfectly with sfpack.. just put the unrared sf pack file in the extracted folder of sfpack app anywhere on your drive, if you have winbottler installed it will automatically open with that, choose "open within winebottler" not to leave any windows junk lying around, extract, soundfont in it's 1.9ghb glory, exit winbebottler, all traces gone, sf2 intact)

working perfectly in reason, only scrolled through 10 patches so far, went straight to the choir, you are correct, it is lovely :) thanks very much and i hope mac users realise they can unpack this with minimal fuss, and winebottler is kind of a thing we should all have in our app folder anyway, for little situations like these :)

Musical Box, the final version is up. I did this based on feedback, very calmly and slowly, these last two months.

These are the improvements and tweaks I have been making very slowly and progressively. This is the last and definitive update to the Soundfont regardless of the feedback, I think it reached a fine balance with these changes, which was my initial goal.

I tested it with more than a thousand MIDI files:

・ New additions for the Distortion Guitar. Added a sustain (it didn't have one) and a Lead guitar layer. Now the guitar certainly "weeps", which I love. The sound is much much better overall, in my opinion. The improvement is huge.

・ Improved Overdriven guitar.

・ I also have improved the Basses, adding new samples and a better scale range.

・ Synth Lead, Synth Pad and Synth FX instruments have been improved too --i.e. instruments like Crystal, Saw Wave, Ice Rain, etc etc, have a better sound.

・ The bagpipe has also been improved (still not as good as SoniVox 250GS one, but it's better than it was)

・ The etnics and percussive instruments are also improved now.

・ 91 new samples. (5699 total now)

・ Improved Pan Flute.

・ Choir Aahs. Decreased Attack and Decay to 0 for an immediate response and full compatibility --some songs need it that way.

・ Slow Strings. Decreased Attenuation DB, so it doesn't hide behind the other isntruments in some songs harmony. There have been many balance tweaks -this soundfont is meant to be "quiet", to help compatibility with all kind of speakers, meaning low quality ones like those on most laptops don't vibrate or distort the sound-.

・ The same for the Polysynth. I decreased the attenuation to match the sound of others instruments and help the overall balance.

・ The Saxes have received some important tweaks, balance wise.

・ Many other improvements not listed here -like some instruments being layered for a richer sound-. Most of them are little tweaks I've been making in the last two months.

I decided to upload the files because the changes are significant enough to upload a new version.

I think that With orchestral, brass band sounds, it is where this Soundfont shines the most -especially because of the Orchestra Drums and the Wind instruments-.

Finally, I also changed and updated the name of the soundfont to Musical Box.

Remember that you will need WinRAR or 7z, or similar to merge the files into a single file. You can get WinRAR here:

http://www.rarlab.com/

Also remember that the file itself is compressed in SFPACK format, from 1,85GB to 654MB, not bad. To uncompress it you can download SFPACK here:

Enjoy. To all of you thanks for the comments, feedback, and so on. See yah'

Hello. Thank you for your effort! I've downloaded the soundfont but despite the max dynamic cache I set in my X-Fi soundfont loader (1968.0MB available. I have 4 gb RAM, maximum for Win7 32bit), I can't load up the soundfont. :(

Any clues?

Well, I am not familiar with the X-Fi, although I have had a few Creative sound cards in the past, my favourite being the original Sound Blaster Live.

However, the Creative drivers for Soundfonts, its memory usage and memory optimization were never good. At least in the AWE and Live era.

I have a very different sound card these days, and I would wholeheartedly recommend you using BassMIDI driver for the default Windows midi handling setup. You can download it here:

http://www.mudlord.info/bassmididrv/#ba ... rdownloads

With this driver, which works perfectly with Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit, you can use any soundfont you prefer (I have a few personal favourites, Merlin Symphony -my favourite-, SGM, Titanic, Arachno, SoniVoX GS250, and a few others) and it only loads in the RAM the samples and memory it actually needs for a song, depending on the instruments featured in a particular song.

Obviously quality in soundfonts is limited by trying to fit sufficient sound samples for all possible orchestral instruments in a certain amount of space. But with this driver this is not a limitation.

You can also use other great software like Synthfont, which follows a similar approach regarding RAM usage:

http://www.synthfont.com

Other fantastic players are XMPlay and Spider Player. Both players support Soundfonts and use the same "memory on demand" method. It's built in for Spider Player.

In the case of XMPlay you are going to need this neat plugin, http://support.xmplay.com/files_view.php?file_id=500 (a 33KB MIDI plugin which is fabulous and accepts Soundfonts)

I hope this helps.
