Hey all,
So I've been doing a lot of music writing, and I've got beats in mind that I really want to create, but the sample world to me is all a blur. What I'm really wondering is... where do artists and producers find all their samples? I don't want to grab something off the first few pages of Google because I know there's millions of one-shots and stuff out there, I just have no idea how to get to all of them because there are so many. Where are you guys able to find all this stuff buried in the interwebs??

Thanks guys :scared:

Just get yourself samples from a reliable sample vendor. For instance:

Loopmasters: http://www.loopmasters.com/
SamplePhonics: http://www.samplephonics.com/
SoundtrackLoops: http://soundtrackloops.com/
Myself: http://www.samplescience.ca/search/label/free?

You'll find freebies on all those sites, and if you want to spend they all offer full fledged sample library for money.

Enjoy! :phones:

Have you considered making something original instead of just stealing other people's music?
He is asking about samples. Do you know what samples are? With over 5000 posts you should :dog: .

There is a page with all the sounds in the world, if you want something organic: freesound.org
A tons of sample packs are available for free. Just browse this forum and you will find ;)
Also, many synths and DAWs come with their own sample libraries. For example tiny MPD218 has two plugins with over 25 GB of percussive samples in total.
You can also create your own samples with field recorder or other synths.

That being said, I use samples a lot and never bought a sample pack on its own.

I'm not sure I'm coming at it from the angle you want, but there are some nice free drum sampler instruments out there that can use in a DAW with a midi file to create most any beat you like.

There are, indeed, lots, and you can make your own, too.

To start with, I'd get some good free stuff, and see how well it works for me. There's lots of free stuff, too, but Bedroom Producers Blog is good at filtering all that down and writing articles about the better stuff.

I'd start with Wave Alchemy's free samples of classic analog drum machines.

Yeah, I was a little too hasty in making that comment, and obviously read the post incorrectly. Being so nasty really wasn't warranted either way. I apologize.

Many folk will make their own, using whatever gear (often, but not exclusively hardware) they already have. All it takes is a microphone and a little bit of work. It doesnt even need to be a good microphone, as long as you're prepared to be creative. I think it might have been 4-Tet who used to record stuff with one of those little 'stick' PC microphones for Skype, but a budget $30 dynamic microphone or a homemade piezo mic would work just as well. Or even your phone's mic.
Recording stuff, chopping it up, processing it, layering that, those are core skills. It might take time but what you'll have is uniquely yours. Obviously big huge multisamples instrument libraries arent done that way, but for drum/percussion sounds, single hits, odd textural loops and the like.

Or you could do that with free samples that someone else has recorded. freesound.org is the centre of the universe for that, basically. That stuff is mostly under a particular set of licenses ('Creative Commons') that's designed to encourage people to share stuff without feeling like they'll get ripped off for doing so. A lot of it tends to be sound effects and field recordings rather than instrument sounds, but again that'd be where you apply your creativity to editing.
One other interesting place to look for free sample collections is bedroomproducersblog.com They list a lot of stuff.

There are also hundreds of commercial companies out there making samples, from bedroom musos making a few bucks, to large companies with 'name' artists producing genre-of-the-month libraries. Some of those libraries have been around for years, and are very well known, to the point of cliche maybe, or just being 'standards'.
Look at Sampleism for a single point of sale for a lot of interesting small sample sets, for and Zero-G for the 'perpetual sale of the day' warehouse kinda deal on some of the bigger companies.

FWIW, a lot of folk take 'regular' sample libraries and process and layer them etc u until they have their own tailored/customised versions. For the lazy there's even a few pre-processed 'boutique' library makers out their like Goldbaby who have made an art of that..

For 'sound effects', rather than music samples (and subject to the 'you'll have to be creative' proviso) , sonniss.com is another front-end, for small sample library makers, as is asoundeffect.com.

(BTW If you want a crapload of stuff fast, have a look at the free Soniss GDC1GDC16 downloads; its about 10Gb of samples that they gave away to folk at the big games developer event. There's a GDC15 one too, but the link isnt obvious any more, you have to ask them for it I think)
my other modular synth is a bugbrand

I've been digging into the converse library lately some good stuff on there,a mix mash of everything, from guitars to organs to synths to drums & some vocals, only problem is you have to download each sample individually no bulk download

I'm mainly really going for drums, as the guitar/synths/bass is all composition for me. These are all some really awesome places! For the pro samples though, is there an existing database where like, all the companies are on one site?? I've seen pro producers in YouTube videos just going through sample packs like wildfire and I don't know where they hear about all this stuff XD

Remember that with a good sampler, you have synthesis options on top of choosing the right samples. Filter, pitch and amp envelopes, not to mention effects, can really mould a drum hit to a track.
