http://sourceforge.net/projects/zynadds ... bfx/2.4.4/

For building from scratch (linux/bsd/osx/etc) there's a source tarball.
In addition there are OSX binaries.

I still don't have access to any windows test machine, so there are no windows binaries available at this time.

I don't understand this Jack thing, it says it won't start without it. Why can't it just use the regular midi/audio interface?

Jack is a low latency framework with services made for music. Most of the regular midi and audio interfaces often introduce unacceptable delays in handling music data. Theres sevaral videos on youtube that explains more about setting up jack. It's very flexible and powerful, hence the added complexity.

for getting jack see - http://jackaudio.org/downloads/

As per why it's the only option, that's mainly a factor of jack being portable and no one submitting a patch for alternatives on that platform.

I got it mostly figured out myself - the only problem is it won't let me save my setup so I have to set up the routings every time I load it. There is a file/save dialogue for the Jack pilot app but when I click on save it says I can't because Jack isn't running (it is) and because I need to have Jack Connection Manager (but that wasn't installed)

Getting some nice sounds from Zyn - lots of Windows! Bit mind blowing.

It outputs some weird wav files when you record, even Audacity wouldn't recognise them at first, I had to import as RAW data. Any way to change that?

It should save to a proper wave if you stop the recording, but there have been a few bugs in the past with this feature, so I wouldn't be stunned if there's another hiding in there.

Been playing around some more with this today - I can see why people like it. Some of the pad sounds in particular are stunning. Just a pain that I have to set up Jack routings every time I start it up, there needs to be a way to save a setup.

Also is there a more modern looking skin anywhere for this? I seem to remember seeing one somewhere.

There is session management for maintaining connections and there is an autoconnect option (aka connect to system:playback on startup), but I'm not sure what the exact status of this stuff is on OSX.

For a modern skin there is http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net/imag ... shot07.png which is the current linux version, however this depends on NTK (a fltk fork) which has portability issues.

In the not so soon future there is likely going to be an implementation of this: http://budislavtvp.deviantart.com/art/Z ... -455890191

Thanks - I can't see any of those things in the OS-X builds of Zyn or Jack unfortunately.

But see:

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr14/a ... f-0414.htm

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun14/a ... r-0614.htm

Zyn is a complex beast, and getting a good handle on usability needs input from many who play or design sounds on this synthesizer. The Zyn UI can stand vast improvement, and I've certainly run into my share of annoyances working with the it, but let's not get fixated on one particular endpoint for change.

From my view, the UI is an obstacle between the sound in my head and the synth. The best UI will be a vehicle to quickly get the ideal in my head into a working synthesizer program, and the cosmetics do not bear strongly on this. To cite an old saw: "handsome is as handsome does." I think there is room for both some form of beauty and high usability, but high usability should be first in mind.

This is a long way of saying "let's use the best things in the proposed UI but not view it as marching orders."

I think I should add, in case some think I'm here just to spread animosity, that I believe Budislav should be central in this conversation since he has proposed a number of very good ideas, and with much thought and hard work, we can create a UI that while perhaps not all will love, at least no one will hate. While some may say that's too low a bar, I say after decades in computing that that's no small accomplishment.

Thoughts?

Mark (fundamental) is a "bang up" coder and great project leader, and I'm glad I was able to contribute in some small way.

I'm hoping to fix some glaring issues (at least to my ears) in my sound set, olivers-100, in the near future. BTW: can some kind soul PM me on how to upload a zip of my instrument changes?

More noise as it happens,
