Example 4 shows best tape gives you that analogue feel and simulations just don't. Also, tape can sound much better than those examples. CDsoundmaster R2R for Nebula does that sweetness thing, but it can't be driven to extreme levels like the UAD tape plugs can.

Lame question: Does Magnetic 2 algos sound a pinch better than v1 or are they identical, minus new features which i could care less about? Thanks..

I haven't tried Mag II but I have seen a few posts where folks are thinking some of the algo's don't sound as good as mag I. I have mag I, I like it, there is nothing offensive about it - it is warm and cushy...but, perhaps, almost to a fault~ i think it smooths initial transients a bit too much. However, I also have UAD card with the Studer A800 - the studer retains the initial snap of the transients better while still imparting some great 'tape-like' characteristics, that said, I hardly ever use Magnetic I.

As for Mag II, I know they expanded the variety of tape-like simulations, tried to broaden it's palette but it is weird that more than once I've read some folks express that they think Mag I sounds better - weird.

I have both Magnetic 1 and 2. The only diference between them is the addition on version 2 of nine tape emulations and a knob for Wow and Flutter. They preserved the sound of Magnetic 1 on the preset with the same name.

Thanks guys, yeah, the reason i ask is it makes almost any mix i run through it sound better (used subtly that is). I'd love to get the Studer, but can't afford it right now - may pick up some other tape plug later though.

You should note that the R2R stuff is now in VST format as well.

You should also note that the R2R stuff is now in VST Windows format exclusively. ;-)

I think this plug-in utilizes older Nomad algo's - it is an older plug-in compared to most the new tape sim's (as in the last two years or so) - i think it has been out for a few years, maybe more - my guess is that this might closer resemble Voxengo's analog flux or PSP's vintage warmer - that era.

The right way to test a tape sim is the cumulative effect over several tracks.
