I had a great experience in the Mechanic Theater in Baltimore, Maryland. About 8 years ago I was working with Paul Reed Smith on a CD. He had a friend, Ben Greenwald, who owned the then closed theater (about 1600 seats IIRC). We were allowed to use the space for our basic tracks. Most everything was isolated except the drum kit. We hung very heavy curtains on the sides of the stage to make the space useful. The sound of the room was great for big rock drums. The stairwells were also exceptional for some special uses.
I did the usual close micing of the kit with great old dynamics on the drums and a brilliant pair of 414s for the OHs. There were two distant pairs used, first an equilateral triangle of 20' with the kit being one point and a spaced pair of lovely old U87s in cardioid aimed at the kit. Add to that a pair of Earthworks omnis about 30 rows deep in the venue and right at the inside aisle (I think about 45' apart).
In the end I used next to no added reverb to the drums, I just mixed between the triangle pair and the deep venue pair where needed. For some songs I time aligned the distant mics, for others not so much.
The great thing is that I made convolutions of the mic setup (with Sequoia) and used it to bring the guitars and other elements into the same space as the drum when the songs called for it. The sad thing is that my studio was broken into and I lost three drives that had the convolutions on them. Paul had a couple copies of the multis as did I but I didn't have the convolutions backed up offsite.
Backup, backup and then backup again.........

I'm OK with "reverbs that aren't Valhalla PLUGINS" being the restriction. This covers every reverb, outside of my plugins. Which allows me to talk about the work I am finishing up for the Z-DSP. Hey, I started the thread, I GET TO MAKE THE RULES.antithesist wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNin4yAEx5o
Damn you and Verbos... (just kidding)
EDIT: Oops... forgot the "non" thing. OK, my favorite reverb is a reverb like this that is "non-Valhalla."
The Halls of Valhalla cartridge for the Tiptop Audio Z-DSP (a programmable DSP processor for Eurorack synths) has 8 reverb algorithms. None of which sound all that much like my plugins. I wasn't able to use the same sort of modulation as my plugins, due to hardware restrictions of the FV-1 DSP used in the Z-DSP. The modulation I did end up using sounds REALLY NICE to my ears. I haven't used this sort of modulation in reverbs before, but I have every intention of using it in the future.
A few sound examples: This is a single sawtooth sound (from my trusty Korg Volca Keys) running through the EnsembleVerb algorithm.

This is guitar, through a B:assmaster fuzz box, straight into the Ginnungagap algorithm set to 100% wet:

Tons of artifacts and interpolation noise in these algorithms, but that is part of the charm to my ears. Which is a good thing, as it is totally out of my control, unless I decide to use no delay modulation. Which isn't the sort of thing I would ever decide to do.

Mmmhh
I dream of moprhing between rooms/reverbs/ambience/delays and or modulate settings with an envelope follower....
Don't know why plugin developers are uncreative in that direction....
Can to this with the eventide space..(the envelope story)
Love it...

I've been using Eos more on synths lately, with VRoom or VVV plate on percussion.

B2 - lush, creative and experimental. 100% wet! Sounds great. A little CPU heavy though..
Lexicon MPX native. Adds some weight to the sound especially with the dark preset. Lovely tone, wraps around the sound.
Exponential Phoenix. Having just picked this up, still finding out the strengths and weakness' of it, but I think this will be my go to for "real" spaces. A small amount goes far. Tons of great presets to get you going.
Reverence - When I need convolution this works just fine for me. The presets are good for specific sources + adding personal impulses is dead easy.
To be fair, I've tried Vahalla reverbs and they never really gel with my sounds. To me it always sounded like a reverb plugin and never really created the depth I am searching for. I wanted to like them... just my opinion.

Thanks! That was in "Boris" tuning (i.e. the tuning used in "Boris" by the Melvins, where the low E is tuned down to a low A):szalonykp wrote:That sounds really good! Wow...valhallasound wrote: This is guitar, through a B:assmaster fuzz box, straight into the Ginnungagap algorithm set to 100% wet:

Acon Digital Verberate. When I want a more in your face verb, I go with Valhall Vintage Verb. Verberate when I want a subtle verb.

Yes like the poster above, I switch to other reverb like Verberate or Breverb for more subtle uses.
If you are looking for new product ideas, Valhalla needs to add a more subtle, more naturalistic sounding reverb to its product range for times when just a touch of subtle reverb are required.

Real world acoustics: I'm presuming that the reverb in this performance is from the room itself.

Hamlet Gonashvili's voice would probably sound incredible through the crappiest plugin.

He's really, really good. Full of emotion and true musicianship...valhallasound wrote: Hamlet Gonashvili's voice would probably sound incredible through the crappiest plugin.
And the reverb (back to the topic) - isn't it too big to be only from the room?
