Go to any Salvation Army/Good Will, garage sale, pawn shop etc. They usually have stacks of VHS players and cassette recorder stereos sitting on the shelves for under $10-$20, if you don't already have one layin around and pickup a VHS movie or two while you're at it so you can record on it. Not that I've tried this yet, but if the tape is not already old worn and been used a lot, there are probably creative ways you can degrade it. If you're lucky you might even find a BETA MAX video player/recorder. I saw an 8 track player last time I was browsing, when I was looking for a cheap receiver to power some speakers.
