DMG Audio Compassion and Soundtoys tremolator. Just very creative to use and they both have other uses.

Thanks.

For Trance Gate type effects (which may not be what you meant) I like this:
T-Force Trance Gate -
http://www.kvraudio.com/product/t-force ... code-music

Nice interface, easy to use, works well, along the lines of Scuzzphut, CamelSpace etc.

Gator by http://delamanchavst.wordpress.com/effects/gator/ is another keeper.

If you are talking more sort of classical use of the term, then I always mention the excellent Gate that comes with the Focusrite Scarlett Suite http://uk.focusrite.com/plug-ins/scarlett-plug-in-suite

It's pretty easy to dial in and adjust your gate time. It works well on a wide range of program material.

This http://wiki.cockos.com/wiki/index.php/ReaGate gets a bit of use in the surgical dept. too.

And of course there is the multifunctional and versatile CamelSpace that I just mentioned. Just too versatile and powerful not to seriously consider if you want to go 'beyond the gate'.

One I'm still getting to grips with is: preFIX 1.0
http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/201 ... 0-out-now/

Takes a while to dial in, but very high quality when you get it right.

http://kunz.corrupt.ch/products/tal-filter is excellent for those pseudo side-chaining type envelopes. Syncs to host and can do other stuff too.

And speaking of pseudo side-chaining, I recently bought this http://www.cableguys.de/volume-shaper.html for just a few quid. Create your own shapes. More versatile than the TAL offering but to be fair, the TAL is donationware. Try the TAL first, it may be all you need, and the Volume Shaper overkill, depending...

From the Fish Fillets bundle -
http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.p ... &subItem=5
----------------------------
FLOORFISH is a simple expander / gate device, easy to set up and offers a broad variety of processing, ranging from slight expansion, backgound noise attenuation to extreme gating effects.
What's different from similar units is the ability to scan the source and adjust the transistion curve accordingly.
---------------------------------

This is also a keeper and works very well, as you would expect, from the mighty Dan Worrall - http://www.platinumears.com/g8.html - simple but effective.

Some of them might be synth edit/synthmaker - not sure. But most of them are free and with an option to donate. Dan or IIRs as I believe he is called here at KVR is another one going to be gettting some well earned donation money from me this year.

And if you want to really get into gating and delve deeper, check out this excellent tutorial for FabFilter Pro-G:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6IpvmqZLR8

Now that is a Gate! Wish I could afford it. Maybe one day.

I said that about the Waves C1 too. That has a very versatile and controllable gate in an extra module that comes with it. Picked it up for not too much cash on a sale. See them around in the market place for not too much also. Gating with side-chaining.

I have to say though, the gating module on iZotope Alloy 2 is very powerful and a joy to use with a beautiful interface. It is part of the Dynamics module actually, but you get two of those in one instance, so you could have one for Compressor duty and the other for Gating if you liked. Silky smooth. Or razor sharp.

Have a look here at http://www.toneboosters.com/tb-gate/ - 0 latency. Well worth considering.

Worthy of a mention also is the Gating feature on Drumformer by Voxengo:
http://www.voxengo.com/product/drumformer/

It is just two knobs - but look under the hood and there are half a dozen parameters for you to set your gating up how you like.

If you just smidgen it and don't bliddy blidggen it (why am I talking like Prince Charles all of a sudden?), then you can tighten and snap into shape any drum track. Absolutely flawless chopping gating heaven. Very very powerful. I see Drumformer as a channel strip really.

And again, depending on what you are trying to achieve, have a look at Melda production's MTremelo and MVibrato

http://www.meldaproduction.com/plugins/ ... d=MVibrato

http://www.meldaproduction.com/plugins/ ... d=MTremolo

Key features

Continuously adjustable oscillator shape
M/S, single channel, up to 8 channels surround processing
Smart randomization
Automatic gain compensation (AGC)
Safety limiter
Sinc interpolation and high-quality upsampling
Extremely advanced and easy-to-use user interface
Automatic synchronization to host tempo
MIDI controllers with MIDI learn
Very fast, optimized for SSE and SSE2 processors.
Global preset management and online preset exchange
Fully automatable.
Supports VST, VST3 and AU interfaces on Windows & Mac, both 32-bit and 64-bit.

However.

But I've left my favourite one till last. Like all Audio Damage plugins, they are fun but functional. BigSeq2:
http://www.audiodamage.com/effects/prod ... ?pid=AD022

This thing is insane in the membrane. It has to be experienced to be believed - the high quality complex effects that are available with a minimal amount of fuss takes a while to get to grips with, but you'll have so much fun trying stuff out, you'll be gating like a champ in no time. It makes short work of all that chopper stutter stuff too. Chopper Harris or Chopper Read. The world is your machete!

Don't come a cropper.
Learn how to use that chopper!
Proper.

Just demoed Fab Filter - G with SSD 4 drums G is great some really good presets to get people started. Wish compassion had a load of drum gate presets as I'm only just starting to use gates. Fab Filter Pro-G makes it easy just picking a preset and fine tuning that. G is on my shopping list now :)

On an old Synthmaker forum (now Flowstone), a guy called Loopeytunes build replica of Nexus trancegate. I built standalone effect with it and from then use it for my productions for these oldschool gated supersaws.

As for expander (which plays very different role in my setup) I use stock Ableton 9(!) compressor. For DJ sets, where I need auto-gain on expander, I use old Kjaearhus Golden Compressor (GCO), which served me well for all these years.

So, well, I can't recommend anything, since none of these plugins is available to buy :hihi:

Just because I'm so used to them anything from Drawmer's DS range
Plug-In wise I reach for Sonalksis SV-719, FabFilter Pro-G and VoS prefix
For noise suppression rather than gating I always have my trusty Boss NS-2 pedals ready.
The only plug-In I use/know of that is anything close to the NS-2 is IK's MXR SmartGate modelled pedal from AmpliTube3. The Gate Expander stock in Overloud TH2 is fairly useable but still not a patch on that AT3 MXR SmartGate model IMveryhumbleHO/IME

I don't really do those trance gate things but I suppose the Adrenalinn 2 by Roger Linn might count as that has some pretty mad gate/sequencer stuff aplenty which I enjoy in small doses of total abuse :)

All the best as always

Edit: @codec_spurt epic my friend, I doubt you'll find a more exhaustive list of options to try out than in codec's write up :tu:

You can't go wrong with ReaGate. Waves C1 gate and gate-comp are nice too, especially gate-comp plugin which allows to do split-band gating, which works great for drums.
If you only need drum gate the most precise would be the gate in Trigger 2. Lately I'm using Trigger 2 mostly for gating.

VoS PreFix is an interesting tool. The workflow is not the best, but it must be due to it's nature : you can do a lot with it.
Reagate is ugly, but it works very well and it is fast to set up.
Has anyone mentionned Preston Gate yet ?

I'll add Xils-Lab RAMSES for those who are after ultra flexible, evolutive, controllable gate sequences, or simple old school trance gate effects. It can mimic almost all gater effects, and brings a lot of unique things in this field as well.
