For vocals I only use these two:

http://www.pspaudioware.com/plugins/dyn ... ldtimerme/
Both are very light on cpu and don't introduce latency and have customer friendly copy protection without c/s

Maxwell Smart (with 4ms of latency it should be suitable for live performance) and ReaComp.
Both pretty low on CPU, ultratransparent and free.

Sebastian

you can't use a compressor plugin inside a DAW for live!
there is sound-card latency
if the other tracks and main buss have plugin fx add their latency to your vocal or worse..guitar performance.
you'll quiclky realise that you can't sing live thru a plugin.
this is the Main reason why you have to rent real Compressors

If your plugin is a Synth-edit/synth-maker creation, Say So.
If not Make a Mac version of your Plugins Please.

I use a FastTrack onstage (thankfully only for 2 inputs) and track through a bunch of plugins whenever the song needs it: compression, delay, reverb, sometimes amp sims. The latency is miniscule, assuming the plugins themselves are zero latency.
For no-hassle, extremely functional, pretty transparent compression for mono vocals, I use CamelPhat Free all the time (NOT CamelCrusher). It's the quickest, feels-like-cheating one-slider compression ever, but it works in almost all use cases where the source is a mono vocal. For diverse types of vocalizing like you're describing, it should work very well and is the easiest compressor to work with on vocals.

Depending on the soundcard, you can achieve low latency with a laptop. Best case scenario is if it has a Firewire port. BUT you said that you scream/shout occasionally. That's gonna overload the A/D, and can't be fixed with a DAW plugin. A cheap 1176 clone off of ebay is your only solution.

Of course it is possible: just set the gain right...izonin wrote: BUT you said that you scream/shout occasionally. That's gonna overload the A/D, and can't be fixed with a DAW plugin. A cheap 1176 clone off of ebay is your only solution.

nothing , but you'll need some cable adapters thoughitneveris wrote:Dumb question I'm sure, but whats to stop someone from using a guitar stompbox compressor? Too dirty?

the point of a compressor is to attenuate the Dynamic range. without a hardware compressor you won't be able to prevent digital clipping distortion of your sound-cards' analogue to Digital convertersrasmusklump wrote:Of course it is possible: just set the gain right...izonin wrote: BUT you said that you scream/shout occasionally. 48 samples ? that can't be right
did u do the cable-from-from-out-into-input and measure the recording delay test ?
