What is the best mixdown you have ever heard ?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

Hi forum :!:

I was looking for some of the best mixdowns lately and even though I listen to quite a lot of music, I don't know every track in every genre, so it would be cool if you could post one or two of the best mixdown you have heard. Because having a good reference can largely improve your mixes too. :D

Even though it's quite a subjective answer, we can still agree on what sounds good, and what doesn't (more or less :) )

So if you have any example in any genre from dubstep to metal, pop or even country music, feel free to share :D

For melodic / uplifting trance It'd be probably Luke Terry, perfect mixdown and mastering consitent over many years.

To bad my favourite "Aedena" was never officially released :(

Anyway, posting best-quality tracks in anything lower than 320 makes no sense to me :P For example the video above sounds pretty noisy compared to original.

Another one for comparison.

Never been in the Trance/Uplifting area but cool mixdown indeed :)

In the Dubstep/Electro House genre I think Rob Swire, Zomboy and Noisia are really good. And even though Knife Party stuff is absolutely mad loud, I think their mixdowns are excellent.

That would be sowing the seeds of love
the complete album sounds like a complete wonder to me

Everyone with a professional deformation in audio mixouts should put a headphone on and drool over this.

So a track with essentially top end that sounds like white noise above 10khz qualifies for a good example of a mix/master....interesting,if we are talking "modern" edm i don't think you can get any better in terms of quality from the bass to the mids to the top end than eric prydz (pryda,cirez-d) and jon gooch (spor feed me).maybe wolfgang gartner aswell but his mixdowns are slightly more "characterful"

I was expecting this kind of reply.
Yes, I think for the amount of loudness the track has, the mixdown remains powerful, without everything behind a chaotic crushed mash of sound.
Feed Me is good, I like his mixdowns but you can't compare, Knife Party is going for the loudest mix possible, Feed Me is far more dynamic.
To each his own but you can't say Knife Party's stuff is badly mixed IMO

And Tool, A Perfect Circle...

Without being too technical, these 2 mixes always amazed me.

The entire Ultra album is a lesson in Pop production, IMO.

I like the "everything in its own place" factor on this one.

To this day, i have to say Kirk Franklin's Christmas album. Everything is so clear and clean, it feels like you are right there with headphones on and super surround sound. Check it out. Sorry i don't have any video for it.

I think that a good mixdown should complements the music. There are not that many single records that come to my mind but Steve Reichs "Music For 18 Musicians" would be one of them. Perfect. Everytime I listen to it (either CD or Vinyl) everything sounds perfect.

Other than that lots of producers have some serious skill or at least some really great engineers. I like LTJ Bukems stuff a lot. So clear, lots of lowend, very transaparent. I like Noisias & Black Sun Empires stuff. Both still stand out if mixed with most of the other DNB records.

I would definitely think that the first Naked Music Recordings releases (from 1999) were a turning point in Deep House music soundwise. Man, I remember when I heard Petalpushers "Breakin It Down" And Blue Six "Music & Wine" for the first time and everything sounded so brilliant and clear with so much presence. Never heard such a quality House mix before. And I am listening to that kind of music since the late 80s.

And I really like the mixes of Rudy Van Gelders Blue Note sessions. I know many people disagree about his skills and overuse of some fx but at least no other engineer sounded that way and his mixes sound still good on todays setup and some of them are 50 years old. :) So lets see whom will be mentioned in 50 years from today on.

Best (modern) metal album of 2012 (imho), especially as far as the songwriting and mixing go.

Might not be evident from the video's sound (switch to HD anyway), but the CD has everything: thumping bass, cutting highs, well-defined middle (guitars and screams) and most of all - distinguishable instrumentation.

Listen, and you can spot everything clearly in the mix at any given time: kick, snare, bass, guitar melodies, in-your-face vocals. And still it's loud as hell!

Something that's not found too often in modern metal mixes. :band:

From my amateur point of view, I think one of the best mixes in these years is definitely Daft Punk's Motherboard... So many elements but I can still hear them clearly, those drums! :)
