Sit for hours in front of a computer and paint notes until you get a melody you like, that's how they do it, they're typical losers, no lifers and some of them make it big time, though that big time is questionable.

Your avicis garixs... whatever, they all came from being losers, no lifers and if you want to be like them you got to sit hours in front of a computer with your mouse and I'm not putting you down here, that's the truth, you can't be cool, do nothing, and make music, behind all that image of them are losers, no lifers who sit hours in front of computer, as teenagers, though they still are, they had no friends (real ones), they had no life, lived in some f*** knows where and sit all day at home asking their moms to buy some donuts when she's on her way back home from work.

Calling them losers, no lifer are not my words, that's your words, YOUR, because in reality your gods are losers, you call guys like that losers, suggest them to get a life, get laid, make jokes about their mom's basement, that's your reality.
How to make melodies like they do? Sit in front of a computer for hours and be a loser, no lifer, that's how.

None of those melodies sound like they're played, it's all painted in while f****king around in fl's piano roll.

Looking at this video, I seems to me he mainly uses the same riff/motif during the whole track, with some small changes, and different patches for leads.

The main things that does this track is not so much the melody, but the programming of "take-offs" and "break-downs"

Had the track been just a regular 4x4 beat with the added melody and no breaks/take-offs, that would have been a very different track.

It's funny that he calls his releases "Keygen" and "Torrent" and stuff like that, and then logical of course follows the release "Error 404" when the Team Air stuff is removed from the warez sites  :P

Ah, so exactly like Garrix.

One thought I need to add:

Martin Garrix didn't come up with anything.
He is just one of thousands people who made similiar tracks before and will be making them in the future.
He is not a genius, prophet or avantgarde artist. He's just lucky guy. Lucky enough to be noticed and become marketed product.

Thus, there is nothing to admire. Nothing to follow. No advice to be given.

Anybody can make music like Martin Garrix.

But there's no point. You can't sell same shit twice.

Yes indeed, he´s not a genius. I was listening the linked "Wizard" video.. oh boy.. he has nothing to say, he just has to make a new beat, the same boring sh!t, because the label needs it.

You can, about million times.

I'm nearly 40 and an old skool techno head but I actually quite like the Gariix track 'Animals'...but as the previous comment said these melodys are basically drawn in

No disrespect to the younger generation here though...music has got alot easier to write via DAWS,etc ,I can remember getting a juno back in the 90's and the arpeggiator was a way to get melody down back then(kind a of way of cheating)

That said I think the early to late 90's was dance musics greatest time when acts were still banging away on their synths instead of laptops(the prodigy,orbital,NJOI,)...back then it was all new but they were still using classic analog gear, all I see nowadays is laptops running aby live with the artist just staring at the screen...dunno maybe I'm just an old git but old skool was old skool and if you didn't live that period of the birth of real dance music then you did miss out, that's not the younger generations fault though, commercialisation kicked in and it all went tits up

I wonder how Koan come up with their melodies, these guys are the cream of the crop these days IMO

EDIT, well their chords are not so difficult to figure out, the tune seems to go in D major, C# minor, A major, and B minor. But they make it sound so darn good

I'm sure everyone has their own quirky little ways of coming up with melodies - one creativity "shortcut" I use is to create a synth line by simply banging out a rhythm on 2 or 3 random keys, not worrying about the notes. Play along with the drum part. Then I go into the piano roll and move those notes into melodic ideas, often with a combination of trial and error and hearing notes in my head.

The idea behind it is that I find it easier to sketch out the rhythmic phrasing of a melodic idea before the actual melody itself. Once that's down, the pitches of the notes are much easier to compose. It's also a great way to work if like me, you have crap keyboard skills. You can also use this technique for recording chord parts that you can't play. Just bang out the rhythm on one note and then copy-drag the notes into chords on the piano roll.

One of the best things about doing this is that as long as you can keep good rhythm with a couple of fingers, you can get parts down without having to quantize them. The result is a far more human, less rigid feel.
