What kind of techniques are being used in this song in general? More specifically, at 1:09 there is a build up to the vocalist's first phrase: "aaaaaaaaaaAH". How is that created?

Seems like some reverse reverb, possible they used a filter to open the brightness as it gets closer to the actual word.
