Sidechain compression when using kick to build

My kick drum and bassline were finely crafted to work together with side chain compression in most of the song. It didn't occur to me what would happen when I no longer wanted the kick on every beat....

Fairly commonly someone might double or quadruple the kick for a build. That's what I wanted to do. It escaped me that it would lower the volume of my bassline by 6-12db for that build.

What does one do in such a situation?

I could just turn the sc compression off i automation and turn it back on again, but then the volumes are too much! and everything was fine tuned to work at particular volume levels. Is there no escaping that?

If I take the bassline out, it isn't much of a build anymore :P

Double the kick track, and mute one, but sidechain it.

I always create a duplicate track, chop it up so the kick will only trigger when active, and then disable the copied track so it isn't played back.BTW, mutingh the track isn't the same as disabling it. Muting will actually mute the output so no point if sidechaining.
