Okay, I just took a closer look at the source material again (alternate snares), just to see what's going on. And there I don't see any need for a shift of the snare tracks with each other to "fix the phase". Just to be sure, I ran it through various "alignment tools", and it showed: "delay 0 samples". Also zoomed in on the waveform just to be sure. If it would be off, then I'd definitely get in touch with Slate Digital, because the snare is from SSD4.
The drummer plays a lot of flams in the production, and it's intentional. Simplified, a flam is "hitting the snare with both sticks at the same time, yet not perfect enough to count as 'one hit' ".
Then I took another look at the "pitching" of the snare. And yes, I can confirm an offset. Which can be easily fixed if it's annoying and/or you want to do that (again, my recommendation is to mix the top mic "subtle" along to the bottom one - yet the tip hit does add to creating a certain snare sound).
How to do this:
Everything between +50 cents and +1 semi tone is suitable for pitching up the snare top mic. This gets it closer to the "mixed snare" if you mix this signal to the snare bottom mic.
So sorry for the "early" adopters (well... we did start on 24-12-2015, so 10 days later is not really "early"), but it looks like you have figured that out already (photonic especially).
But please keep your mixes coming. You still have 11 days left (including today).

Yes, I used the updated snare.Compyfox wrote:...Though did you check if you got the "updated snare" pack if you got the full mix pack within the first 12 hours of the start of this thread? Just in case. (the whole pack was updated on 25-12-2015, which addresses this change)....

it is entirely possible that I imported the files with an offset. I usually have snap to grid off, and could have nudged the cursor or something. The offset was visible in the waveform on my end and was audible.....

On time this time
Tried to go for a 70's feel with a just a hint of modern influences. The only alternative track I used was the stereo toms. Didn't do anything too fancy; parallel compression, gated the double-bass' staccato notes in the solo part to make some space for the solo, bussed the guitar and bass together to glue them, and some simple automation to add accents here and there.

Listening to everybody's mixes so far, every bass guitar is completely different - very interesting!
Did anybody hear the dog bark? I nearly fell off my chair with laughter - that has happened to a lot of people I know.

Hi all
Just a quick hello - I'm new around here. To let you know I'm working on this month's challenge and will submit a mix. I don't expect to do well (I've done almost zero mixing to date), but I do expect to learn a lot! I'm enjoying the track!
Thanks!
zarf

Hi, guys!
This is my first time participating in the KVR Mix Challenge. Glad to join you!
Here is my mix for Jeff St.Clair´s It Came Upon The Midnight Clear:
https://soundcloud.com/smartmix/jeff-st ... thiagoam88
WAV: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_g4B ... WswUGVjMms
MP3: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_g4B ... GlGVUU4Qzg
I went for a more modern/wide vibe, but with a warm guitar sound.
I used the added sub kick drum and the alternative bottom snare for more "beef" on the drums. I duplicated the bass track, used one for the mid-rangy sound and the other was re-amped with Amplitube to fill the bottom end. I also duplicated the shakers, reversed one of them and panned hard left/right (for stereo enhancement). I multed the staccato strings in order to give them a little more presence on the end of the song.
As for the processing, I used Slate's VTM, TDR SlickEQ and Slate's VBC for the tiniest bit of compression (and also for the Fairchild's emulation character) on the mix buss. Mostly (90% of the time) used Slate's VMR and Wave's CLA Classic Compressor on the tracks.
For the FX, I used a blend reverb on all tracks, a large room reverb on the strings, a drum ambience reverb and a 1/4 delay on the slide guitar and mellotron to create some more width.
I hope you like it!

Hi there
This is my first mix on KVR Mix Challenge. feel nervous
Anyway, I mimicked a little with John Lennon's 'Imagine' in piano and re-amp slide and rhythm guitars. And Drums are dulled. Referred some 70,80's tracks such as Santana, Queen, Richard Sanderson.(Sorry to legendary musicians)

From the opening chords, this seemed to demand a vintage approach. This is a fine slide performance, and I wanted to highlight the articulations, and especially the haunting slide noise at the end of the main phrases, with automation.
I added the kick sub, and all the snare samples. The original snare was crushed with Devil-Loc and mixed back in.
I really enjoyed the challenge of this song's buildup. Ideally the outro sounds big, and contrasts with that peaceful intro.
Notable plugs: Little Radiator is all over this. Little Primal Tap on the mello. Kramer HLS and Pie on the piano. MJUC on the strings. Valhalla Plate and PSP Springbox on lots of things. Echoboy to thicken the slide guitars and strings. I used Studio One 3.
