Not to worry - I'm just getting caught up after returning from a very nice vacation and will be posting my entry in the next couple days. As far as the comments about the vocals go, dealing with levels is not such a big issue to me. I will be automating some eq to even out the tonal differences when switching to falsetto. It's a fun track and I'm enjoying what I've done so far.

OK here is my version for now. I enjoyed doing this :) The additional keyboard parts you might hear are the strings duplicated then eq'd before putting through a gate just to add a little more fullness and movement.

I saw this a little late, but yeah, a very cool song so I would be a fool not to participate!

My whole mixing idea was to accentuate the groove that builds up and breaks the whole time to add contrast. Mostly used delays instead of reverb(except snare) to give a driving ambient feel but without drowning stuff out too much. As others said, the vox wasn't much of an issue once automation got involved. Ducking the sub via kick-sidechain is necessary IMHO.

Delays were mostly from a Sony D7 and EchoBoy, the rest was pretty standard stuff - Focusrite Red Compressor, dbx 119, Radiator, Lindell preamp/EQ, ReaXcomp, ReaEQ etc etc, and lots of automation as usual to get everything to play along together.

Hi all,

Automation was very needed in this mix. But I did also split the vox in several tracks to do different EQ and dynamic for falsetto and chest voice. I used a lot of delays, slap back delays, satturation and some chorus to create different ambiance for the different voice parts.

Hello, everyone.

So here is my attempt!

I went for a modern, slightly bright mix. Decided to have the vox not too upfront but also not very "reverby". Used a hall reverb on most tracks along with a combination of different delay types and tempos. Apart from the usual corrective EQ and compression (mostly drums), I used a good deal of saturation specially on the drums, guitars, bass line and arp synth. Mix buss processing was a tape and console sim and SSL compression.

Good luck to all!

I notice no one autotuned the vocals... I did, the first "sees" in the chorus makes me cringe :hihi:
But they're sounding good, well done!

I used ReaTune (comes with Reaper) with the manual correction on some notes. Some are showing in a correct pitch, but still sound a bit off. Maybe Autotune correction is more stringent?

Maybe I'm just imagining things. I use Pitcher in FL, but even then I use it very lightly.
I'm a trained singer, but my voice isn't always "in shape", I basically think of it as a safety net.

Interesting observation regarding tuning. I doubled the main vocal first and then used Melodyne to to lightly retune the original main vocal which I then used in parallel. Some of the high notes now have a more pronounced chorus effect produced by the main vocal being in tune compared to the doubled ones. I reduced the amount of vibrato/pitch drift more than actually hard tuning though in an attempt to keep it sounding natural.

I did use Melodyne to some very small pitch adjustment. I also used Soundtoys' Microshift, which detunes and delays an audio source in different ways to create a stereo effect.

I only use pitch correction as a last resort, I'm not very fond of the sound, it either messes with transients, intonation or the feel of the vox. I prefer the age old trick of two hard-panned pitch-shifters - one up a couple of cents and other one down, mixed in low(just before it starts to sound like double tracking), this mellows the pitch out a bit.

Like thiagoam88, I also used Soundtoys' Microshift to do it.

not too proud of my mix, but I guess it turned out OK :D

anyway, felt like doing a bit more of "industrial" a harder edge mix/sound on this song...

Didn't tune (well, applied a bit of auto-tuning) nor level automate the vocal, ...lazy, I know :ud:

Nothing fancy done to the mix to describe...
