My highly complex tips on low pass filtering... Throw on a low pass filter, if you want to tame the high end, and use your ears. There is really no such thing as 'good practice' in mastering - everyone does different things, differently.

Would agree, you'd be better off looking at high shelving if your main goal is gentle, smooth reduction of highs.
