P.S. Welcome back Photonic! How are the ears doing?
I would say it feels like before I got the problem. I did 3 mixes in the meanwhile. MC25 and one of Mike Senior's great site just for training, and now MC26. Yeah, I think it's all OK again

Here's my entry for MC26. I tried to keep to the recommended reference level, so it's probably pretty quiet, relatively.

My approach was to bring out clarity and detail in the mix and not clutter with FX or soak in reverb. Since this is an electronic track I avoided using saturation and compression to maintain the most dynamic range.
I significantly reduced the quantization noise in the snare by low passing snare 2 and adding a little high boost to snare 1 to bring out the snap.
The "string" track is a little repetitive so I dipped the level during the piano sections to bring out a little more variation in the arrangement.

Quick mix, because of the tracks count and good sounds to start with. It needed a bit more saturation than usual, like the one on the piano.

Let's sneak another mix in before the challenge is over (yes, I'm joining this month!)
WAV: http://studio-compyfox.de/guestartist/k ... mpyfox.wav
MP3: http://studio-compyfox.de/guestartist/k ... mpyfox.mp3
DOCUMENTARY:
- as usual, mix was completely done ITB
- tried to recreate an MPC60 sound (40kHz/12bit engine) which was fairly common end of the 80ies/early 90ies, with bonus added dirt from a vinyl and a noisy tape delay - so yes, a certain "fizz" is on purpose
- used a lot of tricks to make certain sounds "older" (15ips Tape Machine in individual tracks, Trident Console, etc)
- sound shaping is fairly modern (Neve EQ), barely any compression (only kick/bass, transient designer on the snare)
- master bus: a LPF at 18kHz -> Trident Console -> Virtual Tape (30ips, Modern Tape, Normal Bias, signal between -3VU and 0VU)
- used random automation (mute) of the kick and hihat
- limited myself to one main reverb (Eventide 2016) and one delay (Roland Space Echo clone). The snare has a bonus reverb (plate-ish), the bass has a super subtle chorus (Roland Dimension D like, you don't hear it, but it's there). Tried to roughen up the hats with a distortion on the AUX, but didn't work out
- RMS is about -18dB avg, though if the bass kicks in, we're at about -15dB/+3VU avg
SCREENSHOTS:
WORKTIME
From setup to render, about 5 work-hours. Could be more, since i had 1 random crash on closing the host (don't know why - guess my OS is getting long in the tooth), and ran the track on loop a couple of times while I turned off the timer.
SIDENOTE:
The mix might sound a bit "thin" or too "bright", but don't let that fool you. If you have a balanced speaker system/a well treated room or super low going headphones... I moved the bass below the 150Hz range! And in fact, one track had to be phase inverted
SUMMARY
I really wanted to join this time - and if only for sh*ts and giggles. Time was super short for me, but I think I made the best out of it at the very last minute. Wish it had vocals though, but for our first true hip-hop track, an instrumental worked just as fine.
Next time I'll post, the Challenge will be over.
So... now is the time to sneak in your mix.

Nice song to mix with interesting samples ^^ unfortunately I was caught with some IRL stuff so I didn't have time to make the polishing touches.
I tried to achieve a mix between Kheops style (Dj of a famous french hip-hop band I was listening while young, punchy and a bit dry beat) and Xploding Plastic (because the jazzy bass and the hi hats made me think of it). With also the 2016 like sound, meaning it is brighter than what you could hear at the time, and with an heavy and round bass. I also corrected a bit stereo to ensure that mono and stereo mix sound alike.
Good luck to everybody !
Edit : I don't know why but the piano seems buried behing the strings sometimes and this was not intented, too late to change now ^^

SHORT UPDATE ON THE SITUATION:
It looks like the challenge is currently on hold. However, we already tried to reach out to the client via SoundCloud (thanks 3ee) and KVR PM. So far, I did not get any response. But I still hope for the best.
Though if you want, and if there is somebody among us that has close contact to Action Cat, please send him a note. Such delays didn't happen the first time, and I feel always sorry for the participants of the challenge for the long waiting time.
Despite this, MC27 will still start on 01st November.
And with that month, we're down to 1 track in the queue for the Challenge. So please, if you have material to mix for the future - get in touch via the homepageor via PM.
In fact, somebody did contact us via the homepage and I responded, but I did not hear anything back. Neither was there anything in the spam filter.

I'm so sorry I disappeared, I feel terrible. If things can be salvaged, I'm here now.
My ex who I still lived with was kicked out and had nowhere else to go, so I went with her to show her how to survive without a home and so she wasn't alone til she could get something else worked out. I lost track of the date and just got back tonight and realized I had missed the first deadline. Again I'm really sorry... I have a very chaotic life, but I really wanted to make sure I didn't mess this up and sure enough I did.

Hey Compyfox and ActionCat,
The long waiting time is nothing compared to the real life problems we have to face sometimes, so please don't feel so sorry.
Take care @everybody!!!
