Besides download versions of next products (Cubase 7) maybe Steinberg is also thinking about collaboration over the Internet?

I don't see a single hint of this in the survey. For me, it's clearly about moving to downloadable versions and nothing more. If they were thinking of a cloud Cubase the questions would be more complex and more specific.
I think you're right. everyone calm down lol. :x

Post

I can not see Steinberg forcing users to have to abide by a permanently-on internet access to use Cubase. Especially with the Dongle.

But!

"Is your DAW connected to the internet? "

Ableton (no dongle)have done this with the latest demo versions on Ableton Live now.

and

Propellerhead have added the requirement of having to have the target computer online for the instal of RE's. and Reason requires a Dongle after installing a RE if you want to go offline. But you can't instal any RE's to a Offline computer.

Maybe we could get someone from Steinberg to Confirm this is what's Not happening? Otherwise we can Possibly assume that.. it is in fact what they are considering on some level?

Post

Yeah I was just thinking that all the responses so far are based on an assumption.

Post

If they change their dongle to C/R, Steinberg products will never be an option for me again!

Post

I stand by my paranoia.

Hide yo PC! Hide yo Internetz! Hi yo wife! etc.

If this is about purchasing a downloadable Cubase version in future, that's fine, happy to download 10GB or more.

If this is a move to licencing for permanently-on internet access, I will not be upgrading again... (it's your "is your DAW online" question that worries me here)
+1
Apparently a lot of folks feel very strongly about this, and I agree.

The reason I have a home studio in the first place is so that I can create on my own time, 24/7 when inspiration strikes. My internet access, fast as it is, periodically cuts out due to circumstances beyond my control. Sometimes, it's weather-related, and sometimes it's my ISP. But sometimes, believe it or not, it could be Steinberg's servers that cut out.

And there's the rub. I have paid dearly (but gladly) to keep Cubase current over the years. But I'll be damned if I'm going to invest further in a product that could be rendered useless if some clerk in Germany forgets to pay the electric bill.

As far as downloading the product, living in the modern era with a fast broadband connection affords many (most?) of us the luxury of being able to effortlessly do so. I personally have no problem downloading large files, and do so on a regular basis. However, it would also be nice if MY effort in downloading YOUR product saw a significant quid pro quo by passing YOUR savings in shipping/printing/graphics/media/packaging costs directly to ME.

So many plugins, so little time...

Not sure where the permanently connected stuff came from.

Seems to me they're just trying to get an idea of how much their users might use the net for stuff before they maybe make a more useful direct connection to the net to Cubase. I'm sure they've noticed other DAW's doing that, selling plugs, sharing content and presets, uploading and downloading multimedia, downloading and installing content bundles or upgrades directly from the application, etc, etc... unless they've been living under a rock.

I can think of lots of ways a net connection to or from the app could be potentially useful so focusing only on the very worst case scenario does seem a little bit paranoid. :)

The Option to be connected may be nice. but the Requirement to be connected would suck.

Downloadable products Yes

but be able to Use them Offline

especially with the Dongle Requirement.

Unless it's an option to run their products online without the Dongle.

And still be able to run their products Offline with the Dongle.

No "You must have the target computer online to instal things"

Yes to Download products.

No to "You must have the target computer online to instal our products"

It sure would. I'm just not sure exactly what makes anyone think Steiny (or any other regular pro DAW outside of a net daw like OhmStudio) would ever actually do that. :)

They can't be that dense. It would pretty much eliminate Cubendo from most any remote recording without the net and they just made a brand new remote recording app? Besides the other obvious reasons that would be a bad idea.

I think it's safe to say that won't happen... and not sure where it originated, the idea that it might.

Yea but they could start doing what propellerhead are doing right now and not allow you to install products(besides reason..for now) on a offline computer.

The way the RE's work.. Currently.. you Have to have the Target Computer Online to try and buy any RE's. You cannot buy one, download it and instal it on a offline computer. You can however put the computer back offline after you purchase and insert the Dongle.

so if your internet (non wireless) is in one part of the house.. you must move everything to the area where the internet is. and then move everything back. just to try/buy and instal RE's. Even with the Dongle requirement.

Steinberg may have seen this and though it was a novel idea.

Cubase 7 comes out

Downloadable only (great)

Must have Target DAW connected to the internet to instal (no)

Then after you buy and instal everything

you can run Cubase 7 offline with the dongle

which to me would be a step backwards for the customer. Why have a Dongle then?

Downloadable product purchases would be a step ahead!

Also.. Ableton now require you to be Online while trying the Demo. Once you buy it then you can do all the C/R and use it offline. Could be just the start of things.

I'm all for OPTIONS though.

Doesn't hurt to bring any of this up. just in case
