Yeah, it was definitely not the finished product.

Someone done goofed.

Here's an album someone uploaded on the Ableton forums. Some screenshots from the video that was taken down!

That kinda did happen, but the guys called it "Soundcloud" instead, and it never got built in to Live. Hence the offers from Ableton for Soundcloud Pro etc.

Not at all. How can this be called a substitute for sharing projects?

Uhh... that's a major stretch.

The file sharing allowed for easy packaging of live sets and sharing them with other users in the Live community (all based on Ableton servers).

Now that Ohm Studio is around, I'm definitely not advocating for this same structure to come back. I agree with them that it didn't work (out well).

Still, it would have been cool to see a progression, from something to something even better, or... just a better replacement.

Apology or not, failed Live extension or not, it was still a major selling point of Live 8 when it was introduced.

Since then, they have added other many things for free, like AMP (I don't use), Puremagnetic's retro synths (also don't use) and yes, the Soundcloud subscription (for 3 months?? - can't remember the correct duration).

Anyways, I'm looking forward to see what else 9 brings. There's a lot that needs to be fixed/added so this could be cool... but I have my reservations.

I think you might have misunderstood me. To my knowledge, the guys behind Soundcloud were developing a system for online collaboration for Ableton, and then for some reason unknown to myself, they decided to launch their own service called Soundcloud, which is the Soundcloud we all know and love today. I don't think the guys at Ableton had much choice about it.

That's not right though... I don't know if they were ever involved with Ableton, but I can tell you that SoundCloud was out well before Live 8 was released.

I actually got an early soundlcoud beta account through their presence on the ableton forums. Many (based on forum posts at the time) users were using Soundcloud to exchange tracks. I did it that way before I knew about box.net and now have moved to dropbox.

So... why Live 9 and not Live 8? What were the visible differences...?
So now it's time to figure out what's so different...
