Is this a downgrade or just a typo?
No typo, you'll get a free Artist 7 license, if you want the full C7 you will need to pay the 149 euro or whatever it is.
The whole thing smells a bit half baked.
That's BS really. So clearly, this is a Steinberg Grace Period; different from your regular grace period then.
Not that I'm wanting a freebie, but it does seem a bit stupid that if I happen to open my e-licenser program and click the maintenance button, my full license suddenly gets replaced. Wow, you'd want to know about it before just casually opening it.
It would make more sense if it just added a new Artist 7 license rather than replacing the one I PAID for !!!

OK..how the frag am I supposed to update? I activated my 6.5 only on the weekend, but I don't see any replacement license on the dongle. Does it happen now? Does it happen for half an hour on December 5th?

I entered my code from the box, then I was presented with a screen that says "eLicenser needs to update the Cubase 5 license", and it showed a little image of it. It did its thing, quick progress bar: done. Now I see this:

Did you get anything like that?

It looks pretty loaded. What are some other things I might be able to drop?
Well, one-vendor strategy or best-of-breed. IRL no one vendor can do everything as good as highly specialised companies.
Cubase 7 looks good though and it was a nice surprise getting back on KVR this morning as I completely missed any comms about it. Glad I kept version 6, so I think I will upgrade.

I have another question (this is my first Cubase Grace Period):

So I just registered my 6.5. When Cubase 7 comes out, how do I "redeem" my grace period? Does Steinberg mail me a copy? Do I buy it from Steinberg, or am I supposed to get a free copy from a retailer (the only way to get updates in Canada)?

I guess that it will be available to download in your account.

What I miss:

- serious workflow improvements like drag and drop samples, effects onto instruments and channels
- crippled GAO and Mediabay: you just can't preview sounds in song context, you have to load them first onto a pad
- confusing handling of audio quantization with warp tabs and hit points which lead to strange results on top of that.
- complicated audio routing in general: to establish sidechaining takes three clicks in Live. In Cubase...
- bounce in place

Actually, I may have had some bad intelligence there sorry [the Bill Murray kind], it appears the grace period is ACTUALLY a full Cubase 7 license. So good for YOU good FOR you as Christopher Walken might have said in that one movie...

I'm a bit pissed actually, for the second time this month a shopping cart f**ked out on me, this time trying to upgrade a Cubase 6 license to 6.5... at the very same time, my link is removed, so I get no Cubase 6.5 licence, and no free upgrade to 7. I don't really give a f**k about 7, i just wanna have my compatiability with 6.5.
Big surprise Steiny won't answer my email either. Like they ever DO.

When C7 is released, you'll be able to click "Maintainence" in the license control centre and your C6.5 license will be automatically replaced by a C7 license ;)

Anyone got the upgrade prices for C6.0 users at hand?

Just interested, might not go for it though. Some features scare me off.

But when will this be? It's not clear when this is supposed to happen. The grace period is up to December 5th, so I assume that the license should be replaced now. That hasn't yet occurred.

Nope, nothing at all like that. The Maintenance procedure goes ahead as normal without updating any license. Isn't the grace period for Cubase supposed to be right now? Or am I supposed to wait and do this license replacement thing once it's released on December 5?
I'm not entirely clear on this.

If that's confirmed, then it's steep. So they've completely gone the PT route route now. Another reason not to go for it.

But if I don't got for it, I pay even more. (sure went from 99EUR up to 200bucks now, and probably even higher with the next "dot" upgrade). Can't shell out 200 bucks per OS update every year. I rather go for Reaper then (and I'm really considering it this time).

Maybe some beta testers in here? Got a couple of Q's that I'd love to get answered.

1) can Cubase be skinned finally?

2) can the "channel strip" be used in "clean" rather than the offered modeling?

3) how is the routing now with the channels trip? (Cubase 6 it was Insert 1-6 -> Pan/Vol/Send -> Insert 7-8)

4) apparently, they used the Nuendo videos for Cubase as well, but does Cubase have: the vertical waveform (oscilloscope) view, the Loudness Track (in the arrangement)?

5) Can I modify the meters to my needs now, also in terms of color codes. Aiming at the EBU R-128 one, since I would like to customize it in terms of reference level/color codes. According to videos, you can't have peak and RMS side by side like with Reaper.

And what's scaring me off a bit:
- no mention of VST2 technology
- no mention of new and actual VST3 plugin sorting
- no mention of the old mixing console view
- no mention of hardware integration
- no mention of "unlocked" routing
- no mention of the automation control window

The only real upgrade I see here is the new console (which I don't need - I'd like to stay as flexible/clean as possible) and the Arranger/Chord track system (which could be a competitor to Harmony Navigator and it's bigger brother). Oh and I take the Anymix from Nuendo over the GlissEQ from Voxengo any day (and Nuendo's ADT system please - thank you!)

Else it looks as sh't as Wavelab 7 now. I want my knob design back, no pseudo modern 3D slider bars so that it looks more "touch panel" like.

"Steinberg asked the users what they'd like to see" - obviously, they didn't see the FR's.

Suddenly, reaper looks more interesting for Post-Production stuff.

Another beta tester qn: Can it be run on XP (even though it's officially not supported)? ie, just like 6.5
"I was wondering if you'd like to try Magic Mushrooms"
"Oooh I dont know. Sounds a bit scary"
"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"
