Algorithmic type Composing Programs, for Contemporay music - recommendations please

This would be for composing (classical) contemporary music.

I usually find these sort of programs hard to use, but would appreciate any recommendations for programs that might be good for generating *interesting* material that could then be used in a sequencer with sampled instruments and eventually turned into a notated score.

I thought Tune Smithy produced some interesting results but found it difficult to translate into actual notation which I could then use sampled instruments with rather than the terrible internal sounds.

I haven't used MAX but that is my next big step. More interested actually in small easy to use programs that will generate and spit out material - either based on data input or perhaps a midi file of an actual piece of music that it would then analyse and generate new material from.

Do people know about the 'infinity series' (Per Norgard)? I would like a (preferably simple) program that could take material and generate infinity series for multiple voices based on that material. Then its usually a matter of sifting through massive amounts of material and snipping out interesting bits, and so on.

Thanks

yes, that looks perfect, thanks!

Will look into that in more detail.

Might also look at U&I software's XX program. Numerology has various ways to generate ever evolving sequences, but not clear that is what you are looking for. Also Nodal is worth checking out...

If you have a Mac, Numerology has some algorithmic ability and can evolve patterns over time. You have control over parameters that determine how much it evolves, probability, etc too.
Meh.

PC, but that looks interesting.

intermorphic's noatikl i see looks like it just does drone ambient synth stuff. Nice, but Im looking for programs that can play back pitches and the ability to have sampled instruments play them. Then to be able to import to written notation for live performers to play.

These do static or evolving single-line midi sequences (no chords) but are generators only - they do not react to or analyze incoming midi:

This one adds harmonization to incoming midi, not particularly intelligent harmonization, but it can produce some interesting results:

You should definitely try cgMusic: http://codeminion.com/blogs/maciek/2008 ... ate-music/
It has ready to use "classical music" templates.
