Disagree as well. I don't want inspiration from my daw's gui, I want it to get out of the way and let me think about what I'm creating.Regnas wrote:Ableton's GUI sucks... sorry about that.
This type of GUI is OK for other types of apps, I don't think it's suitable for a music creation app. I mean, it's not inspiring.

Ableton's GUI is boring IMHO.
But hey, if you like excel like type of GUI for an music creation app that's fine.

While I understand your point of view, I should add that it's hard to qualify a GUI of professional software as boring or fun. It may be usable or unusable. And I admit that Live GUI is far more straightforward and less messy that a lot of other software GUIs. And one of it's strongest sides is that it doesn't imitate the view of a real world devices. Just my 2 cents.Regnas wrote:Ableton's GUI is boring IMHO.

You have a point about the 'Excel' aspect. I think your beef is not with the GUI per se, but the concept behind it. The clip-based approach has some advantages, but it does tend (not force, but tend) to cut music up into evenly-divided cubes. (They shoulda called it Cubase - oh, wait...)Regnas wrote:Ableton's GUI is boring IMHO.

Clips are a nice complement to a simple timeline. But something like Synfire, which works at the granularity of a phrase (independent of bar-length or anything else), lets you build up your own library, trying out snippets instantly with different rhythms, harmonies, etc. is to me a more natural way to work (unless maybe you are doing EDM or its derivatives).
If Ableton really wants to impress when they go to 10, they should include a third screen that gives you a playground/library for snippets, chord progressions, rhythms, etc.

i think the live 'disco' gui is beautiful
i am a logic user, but i always get tempted by ableton's workflow. gui is definitely a large part of this. it doesn't pull focus, and just screams "CREATE !!", to me
not ready to give up logic yet, but can't afford to keep up with two sets of daw licenses. think i should spend more time trying to squeeze what i can out of 'lite' edition

Another fan of the GUI here ... to me it's the best of the bunch. Clean, clear, simple and easy to understand. What's not to like? I use the "Dark" skin that was available around here for a while. Very easy on the eyes (as is Disco).

OK, can't please everyone....
But c'mon, compare it with Logic for instance...
Live should be bundled in Microsoft office.
And don't forget, software's GUI are like women, more beautiful the better/more inspiring ... we don't wanna look to ugly women for hours, right?
But hey, there is no beauty that can please everyone, right? I'm right, right? hmmmmm...

while 'logic' is trying hard to not look like software (and making a bit of a mess about it), 'live' seems to have no issues being what it is i.e a computer recording environment. it presents a much more unified feel, and doesn't distract from the creative process. in some cases it goes a little too far e.g it might be nice to see some more distinction between the look of the plugins, but maybe were i more familiar with them it would not be a problem
i get the feeling that 'logic' is designed for much larger screens. scaleable plug gui's aside, it just seems like a struggle to use on a laptop. however, 'live' works great on my 15" screen

For me is the other DAWs which have poor GUIs, the worst offender is Reason. All the rest don't any thought behind them, closing and open windows for everything.
Of course I love minimalism, I suspect you may like barroque or victorian architechture

Live's GUI is partly nice but partly ugly. The ugly parts are font, buttons/faders/knobs and feel (it's not visual ugliness though.) Live gives little information about which GUI can be clicked and moved (= learn before use). The feel is the movement of the knob and fader. Too fragile to move and feels cheap. The other is good.

Is ARA (for Melodyne) an important feature request Live 10? I now prefer Sonar and Studio One because they both have this feature. All the way with ARA. Ra ra ra!
Sonar wins also because of its multi-touch implementation and I plan to get a Multi-touch Monitor and new computer when Windows 10 is released. So is multi-touch another important feature desirable by Live users? Touch, touch, multi, multi touch. Isn't it touching?

Not everybody thinks like that, that's what I tried to say earlier. I just want it to be clear and easy on the eyes and I'll bring the creativity and inspiration to the table. Faux 3d doesn't look "beautiful" to me either, usually just busy.Regnas wrote:And don't forget, software's GUI are like women, more beautiful the better/more inspiring ... we don't wanna look to ugly women for hours, right?

I agree mostly. Bitwig kinda addresses that by making the buttons 3d and all the controls orange. There are some parts of live that I feel run together when I look at it, stuff like font, line weight, use of to many colors in one place for different controls. That stuff could be tweaked.tooneba wrote:Live's GUI is partly nice but partly ugly. The ugly parts are font, buttons/faders/knobs and feel (it's not visual ugliness though.) I've always found Live's GUI totally insipid but it's such a good sound engine that I would never give it up. Using the TouchAble control surface on the IPad has given me a whole new level of appreciation for Live. This combined with my Launchpad, Nocturn and Keyboard means I rarely have to look at its utilitarian ugliness but just bask in its sonic loveliness. Huzzah for Live!!!
Just make the music that you enjoy (failing that go for a walk, watch some porn, have a fight with a random bloke until something else happens).
