Windows 10 - Information on compatibility

It is safe to say that any time there is a major OS update it is wise to be cautious, especially if what ever hardware drivers you absolutely need have not been tested or updated.
I remember having to stay on a PPC based Macintosh for the longest time simply because Native Instruments took their sweet ol' time developing Intel compatible plug ins. You know what I did during that time? I played music.

Windows 10 is now stable, but I agree this is still a WIP, and will likely see some notorious changes in the next couple of months.robotmonkey wrote:I have been using the insider preview form the beginning and must say that I would not put all the blame on devs. MS has kept changing things quite a bit and quite regularly breaking compatibility with stuff that was already tuned to work with Windows 10.Karma_tba wrote:Granted this is day one, but the fact remains devs have had months leading up to this release. If that is pessimism...so be it.
And honestly, even the latest release is pretty much half-baked as it is now. It will still need a lot of work. I would hold on upgrading just for that. And obviously, if you have a stable Windows 7 DAW I see no reason to upgrade at all.
If Microsoft vision for the new Windows will be fulfilled we will never again have a frozen platform, unless we block updates, but then we will also not have fixes. Anyway, it's more or less what happens with OS X since many years - Windows users are facing a changing in paradigm.
OTOH Microsoft has a long history of respecting backwards compatibility, and even with the Insider versions, I didn't notice any major incompatibility.

I'm looking forward to having a play but I'm lucky enough to have some spare laptops, one is the name model as my audio laptop so will have the chance to check compatability and foibles without it affecting the laptopm that matters.
I don't forsee any major problems that can't be sorted with bsome common sense.
This is Windows after all!

Don't know why but my brain automatically read it "BSOD"VariKusBrainZ wrote:problems that can't be sorted with bsome
And of course there's no problems in Windows that can't be sorted with some good ol' BSOD's. It's Windows after all.

They HAVE to respect backwards compatibility, since they have MUCH more users than the whole Apple contingent (phones notwithstanding). Plus, Windows are used in military, medicine, transportation, ATMs, a lot of embedded systems... You won't see a shred of Apple there, because they are a closed system.fmr wrote:OTOH Microsoft has a long history of respecting backwards compatibility, and even with the Insider versions, I didn't notice any major incompatibility.
This means Alchemy is good on us Windows people, for quite some time to come!

My creative sound card started working after a full power down although it's control panel wont launch.
Found a fix for ilok in windows 10 that works for me.
In windows search box type services.msc
Click it
scroll down to pace in the list think I right clicked it and clicked start.
Ilok now works.

Upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. FL Studio 12 (with Harmor, Toxic Biohazard, Sytrus), Saffire pro 24, VRM Box, Access Virus Virus Ti, U-He Bazille, Diva, Hive, Zebra2, Presswerk, Satin, Tyrell, NI Kontakt 5, Massive, Dune 1/2, Reveal-Sound Spire, Cakewalk Z3ta 2 all seem to work just fine. And performance is much better then on Windows 7.
So far i am very happy with the upgrade except for taskbar icons, they are ridiculously small.

Why the rush anyway? Are we musicians or computer geeks? (Or both? )
It will be free at least for a whole year, and chances are high that MS will prolongue this period. So let the nerds do the beta testing...
I would totally understand if Win10 had some real groundbreaking stuff especially for musicians to offer (like built-in ASIO or something). Right now for me it's just another Windows version.

Hi Guillermo. Glad to know that you are this information to customers. Are you in contact with Microsoft to solve the issues regarding those "Performance and timing issues", since, as you say, they ""are related to changes made in the MMCSS of Windows 10"?Guillermo Navarrete wrote:Hello all,

Guillermo - QT 7.7.7 can be installed on W10 (in compatibility mode, I assume), users have it running in W10.

Hello,
Best regards,
GN
Good to know, I will forward this to the QA, perhaps it changed after they ran the tests, who knows. If it can be done we will update the information as soon as possible.EvilDragon wrote:Guillermo - QT 7.7.7 can be installed on W10 (in compatibility mode, I assume), users have it running in W10.

The Microsoft rep (Pete Brown) said they have not changed something with the multimedia timer so this comment from Steinberg is not confirmed at this time. Ed Doll confirmed also on Steinberg they had good working systems but they had also some systems with issues. So IMO it's more that Steinberg is on the safe side.
BTW: Presonus confirmed that Studio One 3.0.1 is compatible with Windows 10 like most of their other products
