Been using FL 12 for quite a bit now. I like it, its great, I pretty much know it inside and out like the back of my hand.

There are many reasons as to why I have been looking at making the switch to Ableton Live, workflow reasons, seeing so many people on youtube use it, it seems like the workflow would be beneficial if I can get used the DAW. The built in effects it has to offer is mostly what really strikes my interest though...

Anyways, for the sake of a ramble ill cut it short.

Anybody have advice for the best most comprehensive time saving, clean cut but thorough course/tutorial series on how to use Ableton live?.

I want to try giving it a month or two and really try sticking to it to learn the best I can, If I feel its worth it Ill buy it.

Because damn! the suite is expensive lol

I would choose https://www.macprovideo.com/tutorials/A ... pplication (from Live 9 101 - Live 9 207 and Live 9 303
Ableton Live TNT - Tips and Tricks, others are optional ones)

+ streaming account

but I would wait FL 20 beta2 ;) , AL is only better if u work with samples mainly, this way >>

I compromised to use Live just for complete-undo, auto make-unique, ctrl+G rack, liner track (Midi in -> midi fx -> vsti -> vstfx), Cut&Paste plugins with Automations, on-the-fly warping. Native plugins I liked in Live are EQ8 and Side-chain in Compressor. EQ8 has mid-side feature by default, and doing sidechain in compressor is so easy.

For other part of workflow, FL offers much convenient features. And plugins like Sytrus, Maximus, Harmless, SliceX, Edison, Fruity Love Philter and Vocodex are far more powerful in comparison with Live. Sry, little off topic.

IMHO this is why Pathcer has been invented (can create any kind of device)

I can't see it super difficult, but can't be replicated in AL which knows only MIDI channel 1 in its inner routing :( (ok M4L devices sender/receivers knows MIDI channel other than 1 but it's not the same)

and any kind means really any kind

I understand the functioning of Patcher, and I think Patcher is more feature rich. But I can use Rack as a feature more fused into daw's wokflow. For example,
  • insert vsti to track A, FX, create automation.
  • Add FX to other track B, create automation.
  • Going back to A and want to add another vsti, select all vst in A and ctrl+G to rack.
  • Let's move track B FX into A's rack.
(In Live the automations are transferred to where you Cut&Paste.)

I feel the integration of Patcher is suitable for one-way workflow and not convenient when you work back and forth and use it as simple bread and butter function. Let's hope IL revise how Patcher is integrated into host.

I don't know if it's the best, but Lynda seems to have a lot to offer and has a 30 days free trail:

automation in AL isn't pattern based (multi-map M4L device can be used, if a common automation source is needed, but that also need re-registration after the target-device duplication same way as in FL, common macro can't be used for multiple targets by default in AL) there is no connection between the duplicated automation clip instances, ok they can be duplicated with the track/rack but after the duplication all of them have to be modified one by one

btw can be automation automated, without any additionally device, in AL, not sure in it ?

ps. "on-the-fly warping" Newtone can be linked to the playlist, not the nicest but can live with it
