Poll: GUI scaling importance

There are a couple of reasons I can think of why the ability to enlarge the size of a DAW's interface elements could be important to someone. High-resolution/DPI displays and bad eyes come immediately to mind. I suffer the latter (not horrible, just normal bad eyesight), and if a DAW's visual elements are too tiny, I simply won't consider using it.
Bitwig is the absolute champ at this and scales everything, Live is great except for the splash screen and preferences dialog which don't scale, Mulab and FL Studio are both largely scalable now. That's about it as far as I can tell. Feel free to correct me on that.
I'd like to know how others feel about it.

If there's an option to use it and you require it, it's obvious it's going to be essential for what you do, but it's equally useless if the plugin's don't have the option to scale in equal fashion to be functionally usable when it comes to interaction.
What it boils down to is that having the option to scale to higher resolution if one wants to, is of great benefit and forward thinking of a developer to provide the option within the software for it. Daw's which don't embrace 'Hi-DPI', will fall down the rankings ( or desirability ), if they fail to provide it, as years pass by when 4K & above become more mainstream and 1080P screens become phased out over the next 5 to 10 years.
Daws such as Reason are all ready suffering when it comes to it's fixed rack resolution of the year 2000 where (800x600 / 1024x768) was the norm.
It's better to have the option, than no option at all.

If you could care less, that means you care more than not at all.

It will matter to me once I go larger than 1920*1080. But all dev should be looking to incorporate it.

Grrr... Force of bad habit! It should be "Couldn't care less". Sorry about that, but last time I changed something, all the results disappeared. I'll just have to look foolish for the duration.

Hmm, looks pretty much like the majority of users like the idea. And as it doesn't affect those who don't care...
Actually, here in San Francisco I attend a lot of startup events and the interface being scalable and even alterable is simply assumed for any new product. There are just too many different resolutions and devices out there.
I will say that BItwig nailed that part of the equation. But they did start after this had pretty much been established as the GUI development modus operandi.

Add another scalable product to the list: Soundbridge. Does anyone know if Stagelight is scalable? I don't use the Microsoft Store.

It's not the scaling that is important. If the plugin is too small, it's hard to read the captions of the knobs. So if there's an option to choose from 3 size, or just 2 - that can be enough.
Like Imposcar2 that has 3 size, Or many Rob Papen stuff has "big screen" option.

Those 1/2/3 options are simply a more limited form of scaling. Imposcar2 looks like it uses bitmaps. They're great if you want a extremely detailed or realistic look.
But the use of bitmaps is declining. Once upon a time, blitting bitmaps was far, far faster than drawing an object, which is really why they became popular. Now, computers and drawing are so fast, you can't see it.
If you're not worried about making things extremely detailed or look like a real-world counterpart, then using drawing methods (or basic, easily stretchable bitmaps) makes things far more configurable. Colors, size, and even appearance can be changed in far less time than it takes to detail a new bitmap.

This is probably my single largest complaint with Reason (aside from current VST performance). Not being able to properly scale it is damn near irritating. I realize Windows can scale for me, but it comes out fuzzy on a 4K monitor and the rack still looks bad when compared to a properly scaled GUI/UX with 4K assets in place.jonljacobi wrote:There are a couple of reasons I can think of why the ability to enlarge the size of a DAW's interface elements could be important to someone. So yeah, I'd rate proper scaling on higher DPI/res monitors very important.

i find it very weird that people use monitors with uber high DPI resolution when they cannot see the details with bare eyes anymore.. this makes almost no sense to me
for me, it would be bad if a DAW/plugin is made for those big resolutions and has no option to scale it down so i can actually fit it into my 1280x1024 resolution
thus i voted for the "handy" option, but i think i'm not in the same situation as most people

Fair enough. Up or down. I only run 1920 by 1200. Hardly uber anything. Most of the users with high DPI scale Windows so that the screen elements are much the same size, just smoother because of the extra pixels. What display are you running that's 5:4?

the problem is not resolution but DPI
you can probably find a 24" monitor with HD, fullHD, and "4K" resolutions, the difference would be the DPI, or pixel density
for me, the DPI of my monitors is okay.. they both are 17" with 1280x1024 resolution
that's a DPI of 96 according to my calculations, and it's acceptable for my eyes + viewing distance
a higher DPI would require me to either look from closer or to use a magnifying glass
i would probably buy a "bigger" monitor in the near future, because i want to fit more "stuff" on screen
that means a monitor with a bigger resolution but still about the same DPI as this one, so the physical size of the monitor and the resolution will grow, not the DPI
this makes sense for me.. what most people are doing - doesn't

It's a necessity. Ask any Windows user who has tried to use Digital Performer.
