At one point I got a discounted pair of Sony MDR-7506 which are supposed to be as good as the V6 headphones for about $67. If you're patient enough for that sale and you can get someone to get you an Amazon gift card, that could be the way to go! I love them myself.

2. Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Headphones

which one do you think is proper for mixing and mastering? (or at least good.)

I started with the Senn 280s for recording. I would not recommend them for mixing; it took a year for them to break in and have any bass. They are much better now. But still I would not use closed phones for mixing.Any Good Username? wrote:1. AKG K 240 Semi-Open Studio Headphones

I used a pair of Senn HD 555s for mixing before I upgraded.
I use my monitors primarily for mixing, and I now use AKG K 271 Mark II headphones for recording. They are much better at bass than the 280s and could be used for mixing in a pinch—in fact, I regularly check mixes on them.
I now use AKG K702 headphones when mixing. They are quite good.
There is a difference between the non-mark II and the mark II variants of the K271; check head-fi.org for details. I consulted there before buying.
Please lock your other thread since it's a duplicate of this. You asked there where this thread should have gone; getting started would have been appropriate.
Good luck!

When I was looking for affordable studio headphones that received favorable reviews, I settled on Audio Technica ATH-M50, which turned out to be excellent. They're in the $/€150 range (I got mine for €100 since apparently the red ones, a limited edition color, didn't sell well.)

that's a shame. it would have been interesting to see if he was just as demanding and ungrateful in the second threadD.H. Miltz wrote:Moved to Getting Started. Second thread deleted.

I recently got to test them all, and came away with Samson SR850s. Excellent budget cans.

For such expensive headphones the connection between cup holders and headband looks very fragile.V0RT3X wrote:Well if your not gonna spend money on monitors but are willing to invest in super good quality headphones I would pick this.

People will probably say "OMG too expensive!" but I think these are more than worth the price.
Good read about using headphones and such...
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan07/a ... phones.htm
And they can get very loud according to the specs, dangerous stuff
Plus, does it make sense to get such great phones when the rest of your equipment is mediocre?
I guess I will get the new version of the AT M50's...
Or some AKG's. From those two brands it is hard to buy something bad. Unlike with Sennheiser, which seem a bit outdated and overpriced for what one gets. And the reviews are often not exactly flattering...

I've used the LCD 3's. Superb. Seriously, they destroy my Genelecs for detail; I've A/B'd them with the K&H 120's as well and they came out on top. Wish I could afford a pair, but alas at that price, its never going to happen, but money no object...elxsound wrote: (in relation to the LCD3's) Too much of a love fest. I would need to try them for myself before I can become a believer. I honestly hate online reviews for headphones because the reviews are absolutely all over the place.
Still, I'm definitely interested, but just have to find a place to try them.
FWIW i've never been a fan of the ATH MT50's in the past as I've found them a bit boomy and undefined but the M50X is a tighter beast all around and I'd seriously consider them at that price point these days (hell, I'm tempted just as a second pair for out and about). Personally I ended up plumping for the Focal Sprit Pro's myself in the studio, suprisingly detailed for the price although admittedly that's the next bracket up from the MT50's. Headphones can be fairly subjective however, well worth trying out as many as you can prior to purchase.fluffy_little_something wrote: I guess I will get the new version of the AT M50's...

I definitely like the Sony mdr7506 -- only 84 bucks or so. They're probably not in the league with the megabuck ones, but for the price I don't think you can go wrong.

you can't mix with headphones
Mixing and "mastering" is always done on several types of Monitors, a lot of people listen to music on ear buds connected to their iPhone/iPod.
and then there are alot that listen to music in their Cars and their home's stereo system
Don't forget Bars and Clubs. so that means alot of different speaker systems.
And FM radio stations need specially mixed versions, so that mean alot of speakers of varying size and quality
so mixing with headphones is bad idea in terms of "this should sound good on whatever its playing on"
mixing and "mastering" is more a make-it-compatible-for several-listening-environment.
Than making it sound Awesome
You have to make compromises and you have to be realistic
unless you think your listeners will only listen to your music on "just this make and model set of headphones"
