My interest is in learning what some of the favorite software/hardware tools are for over-internet DAW-to-DAW integration for remote jamming and recording.

Having enjoyed some rudimentary experiments with FaceTime and Skype, and not having the budget for ISDN or Source-Connect, I am trying to find solutions with an emphasis on open-source and more affordable options.

I realize some DAWs (Cubase, Pro Tools, etc.) have their own proprietary link tools, but I would like to not assume which DAWs will happen to be on both ends of the connection.

Discovered Jack Audio already which looks pretty promising: http://jackaudio.org (http://jackaudio.org)

Any other recommendations?

Jamulus is free, open source, etc. Needs work setting it up. See http://jamulus.drealm.info/jamulus for hints and where to find the software.

Of course, given how slow the internet is compared with the speed of sound, it's really useless for real-time interaction. Exchanging files over a cloud drive is another alternative.

If you're interested in something that can feel more synchronised, you might like NINJAM. Reaper comes with ReaNINJAM but you can get JamTaba VST (free, open source) for any host.

JACK networks audio applications on a single host. Of course, if one of those audio applications sends/receives audio out over the network, then it integrates that into your local JACK network. (e.g. see discussion of using Jamulus on the link above.)
