Dubtron2 is the successor to the original Dubtron bass synth, taking it's modulation-based concept into new territory, exploring quirky analogue basses, modern rhythmic soundscapes, chilly dub techno and experimental ambient textures. Dubtron2 uses beat-driven modulation and sub-rhythms along with randomization to bring about interesting rhythmic sounds and atmospheres. This along with it's serial filter system, a feedback-looping dub delay and a "Phonec-style" Melt feature makes Dubtron2 a extremely versatile instrument with a unique approach to sonic exploration. Here is a brief overview of it's key features:
  • Dual oscillators with Unison and Pulse Width
    Sub oscillator with FM capabilities
Dual Filter system with serial routing
    Soft clipping / Distortion
A unique Melt feature that adds instant character to any patch
3 Polyphonic LFOs with BPM 'speed dials' and randomization
Sub LFOs for creating parallel rhythm offsets
    3 assignable Modulation Envelopes
Dub Delay Unit with feedback looping
Multiple targets for modweheel and pitchbender
    Universal Value Display
    Double Click Parameter Reset
    128 presets

Dubtron2 is available for $39 as a Windows 32-bit VST plugin.

Congrats! Sold! I can't wait to get my hands on it! I actually have a project in the works that this is perfect for! Especially in concert with Phonec. :)

A quick question in the mean time: Is there any support for aftertouch or midi learn?
A heaping dose of outrageously goofy synth tracks, scores and chiptunes.

Not at the moment. Aftertouch is something I've been meaning to get to on Phonec, so maybe I can just update both of them with aftertouch support. I'll try to get to this soon.

I think it would be really interesting to hear aftertouch applied to the Melt knob. Kind of like Blade Runner, but instead of Vangelis making a gorgeous filter swell, we could use it to make a gorgeous Melt swell :)

Also, I hate to be a nag, but, is there a way to change the pitch bend range to be 2 semitones, rather than 12? With all this synth bass going around, I really feel the need to get my funk on, and slide all over the place in some bass lines.

I finally got to try out Dubtron 2 today and I was floored by some of the presets. Dub Pad in particular is a bloody show stopper. Fantastic work, Jack!

That's kind of the idea I've been having about aftertouch. Like the sound would begin to disintegrate with the pressure of the keys. It would be so expressive on such a different level. Now I just need to get a decent midi controller with aftertouch so I can try this out. Any recommendations?

So recently my midi controller's pitch and modwheel stopped working, right before I implemented the mod and pitch wheel targets in Dubtron2, so I was never able to test these out. (Looks like I have multiple reasons to get a new controller...) I just setup the targets and completely forgot about the ranges. So I'm glad you pointed this out. I'll fix this in the next update.

Glad you like the 'Dub Pad' patch, it's one of my favorites as well :)

I know next to nothing about keyboard hardware. I was told by a friend to order a Roland A-500PRO and I have never regretted it. I would definitely extend that recommendation to you. It's the next tier above the dirt cheap price range, but you get pretty much every kind of midi control interface you would need (knobs, faders, aftertouch, and a dandy mod\pitch control stick). It's really good for simulating vintage synth tweaking.

Also, thanks for your super fast responses. :) It's great to see developers that are excited about their original creations. Keep it up!

Good day Jack,

Just a quick one and wondering is Aethereal getting the same treatment as the other plugs?

Cheers.

Thats a good looking midi keyboard! The price isn't too bad either. I've been using an Alesis Photon x25 for years, and it's high time I move on... Thanks for the suggestion, it looks exactly like what I have in mind.

I have some big ideas for Aethereal: abilitity to load user wavs/soundfonts, improved built-in sounds, needs some low end (sounds kinda thin at the moment), some kind of Melt feature would be very cool, filter improvments, definitely an improved patch system and maybe even an improved wav browsing system. I've got a whole list of to-dos for this one, but it's been on the back burner. I've previously considered doing the update using the current 32-bit only version of Synthedit, which would be easier, but I think it would be much more wise to do it in the new version of Synthedit that has the potential to pump out 64-bit plugins. I'd love to hear thoughts on this, maybe I should start a new thread...

Wow,big list of jobs! I personally think it would be a very wise decision to go 64bit with Aethereal.32bit is no problem for me in any way,all your plugins work solid.

I was actually pretty skeptical about Dubtron2 after buying the first version 3 years ago. Dubtron(1) lacked so much control, and while it had some great options for making interesting combinations, I lost interest in it quickly.
This thing is a whole different animal. I've picked up the demo and tried pushing it's limits and looked for flaws that would give me trouble when producing later. Haven't found anything, yet.
In fact, this vst is(I think) much more powerful than even you credit it for.

I will have to buy it after I get home from Detroit and give it a full analysis.
I like to review free VST instruments.
If you have one you'd like reviewed, pm it to me and I'll consider it if I have time.

At some point right before finishing it up I considered changing it's name, but I figured with that would come a whole slew of changes and I'd never finish it, so Dubtron2 it remains.

Excellent! But if you do, don't hesitate to let me know.

Wow, that's the kind of thing I like to hear!
I like the idea that it may have strayed so far from it's original path that it's become a kind of frankenstein monster.

Looking forward to what you come up with :)

I didn't notice Dubtron much before but with the release of the new version I read the manual and was much interested in the really unusual and useful modulations available. I really like the ambient possibilities it has. The well thought out LFOs and envelopes are my favorites.
The purchase of Dubtron2 was a good move forward.

I often find myself using Dubtron for ambient purposes in my own music :)
