I agree that the selection color can be too dark. It's on the whishlist. In fact it's on the whishlist together with the 'unique/shared' layout topic. They're very related, technically. I've got an idea about it but it still needs to be researched.

I think i have more understood the second answer to the topic.
When reading the mulab manual i have see this:
The composer draws the parts with a subtle 3D effect: when a part is drawn 'down', then it's a unique part i.e. it's the only part using that sequence. When a part is drawn 'up', then it's a shared part i.e. there are more parts (may also be in other compositions in this session) playing that sequence. so just ability to skin this part with a .png and the 3d 'll become a rounded rectangle like the focus.
I know that's on the wishlist mutools it's just for answering to pljones.
